Product Review: Kevin Murphy Born Again Masque

I have long hair, down to the middle of my back, and although it is in a fairly good condition, there is no denying that especially in the summer part of the year it tends to get a little drier, and the ends tend to split more. So when I was asked to trial *Kevin Murphy Born Again Masque I happily accepted.

What They Say:

"BORN.AGAIN is the centrepiece and core treatment in the KEVIN.MURPHY range. It is such a unique product that contains ingredients that are so small in their molecular size and weight; they can pass into the cortex of the hair instantly. Essential oils are the force that brings KEVIN.MURPHY products to life. They are heat and light sensitive; Once you open them to the air and light they become energised: moisturising, repairing, and regenerating."

What I Say:

The Kevin Murphy products are a salon only, professional, range of hair care products created by Kevin to meet his needs as a hairstylist.

Some of the key ingredients in the BORN.AGAIN.MASQUE are among others Biotin (Vitamin H), which helps to prevent hair loss and improves the health of the scalp, Aqueous Extract of Bambusoidea (Bamboo), which helps keep the cell structure of the hair neat and straight, making it less prone to breakage.

It also contains Shea Butter, to soften coarse and frizzy hair, Rose Hip Oil for its moisturising properties and powerful antioxidants. It also contains Orange Wax which is rich in vitamin C and closes and lightly coats the cuticle. It also contains Hydrolysed Silk Proteins to add strength to the hair with a silky feel and Grapefruit Extract, which promote hair growth and is cellular regenerative. It also provides beneficial treatment for oily skin and hair.

Another key ingredient is Amino Acid L Carnitine, which acts as building blocks that enable proteins to bond and improve hair quality. And of course it is also sulphate and paraben free. All in all a pretty impressive!

The BORN.AGAIN.MASQUE is a thick cream, which is applied after washing the hair, and then left on for 5-10 minutes. And being so thick and creamy, you could imagine the treatment being difficult to rinse out, but that is not the case – it rinses out easily, without leaving behind a greasy residue (unless it is because my hair has been so dry that it has simply absorbed it all!!) After rinsing the treatment out, my hair is extremely easy to comb, and once dry I my chemically hair feels so soft and shiny and so much healthier looking. Even the ends of my hair felt and looked so quenched with moisture. Literally BORN.AGAIN!

And especially the Silk Proteins seems to work, as I can really both see and feel the difference in my hair after each treatment, and I love the way it feels when I run my fingers through my hair. It really feels like silk!

Unfortunately the masque also contains silicone in the form of brassicamidopropyl dimethylamin, which is suspected to cause problematic build-up on the surface of the hair which can lead to hair that feels weighed down and limp. But so far using this treatment in my hair once or maybe twice a week, I have not noticed my hair to become suffocated with build-up, on the contrary, as mentioned below, I really feel that it is improving the health and look of my hair. The name of the masque, BORN.AGAIN really is so fitting!

The BORN.AGAIN.MASQUE has a pleasant floral scent, which I really do like, and this scent stays in the hair once dry, although it still very faint, and far from overwhelming.

It comes in a sleek and easy to use matte white tube with stylish silver writing. The tube has a flip lid, and is designed to stand on its lid, which I really do like, as that way the product drops down as you use it, and I know that I can use up every last drop of the masque.

At $39.95 for a 200 ml tube, the masque is not cheap. However, the masque is very concentrated, and even in my long and thick hair, only a little is needed, so used once a week the tube will last you a long time – and if used frequently, it can make an amazing improvement to both the look and health of the hair, and possibly also help stretch the time between haircuts, so all in all a fantastic buy, which I personally think is worth every cent!

So all in all it is a fantastic deep treatment, and if you are like me have chemically damaged, dry and stressed out hair, I highly recommend you try it. And I will definitely look into purchasing again as well as look into other products in the Kevin Murphy range.
