I have all days struggled with my skin. In my younger years I had bad acne, and even today, where anti-ageing product should be the only products in my beauty cabinet, my skin is still temperamental and very hormonal, frequently breaking out. So needless to say that I was excited when a selection of anti-acne corrective care products from La Roche-Posay landed on my desk, and I could put their #ActOnAcne Challenge to the test.
La Roche Posay is a dermatologist developed French pharmacy skincare brand that is designed to not just be effiecient, but very gentle on the skin at the same time, and the fact that it is no.1 acne-prone skincare range in pharmacies across Europe says it all.
I’ve put the following products to the test;
- Anti-Acne 3-Step System, with Effaclar Cleanser, Serozinc Toner, Effaclar Duo+
- Effaclar Unclogging Purifying Sebo-Controlling Mask
- Toleriane Teint Mineral Compact Powder
The La Roche-Posay Anti-Acne 3-Step System, is a simple 3-step system that promises results from day one, with blemishes looking less red in 24 hours, blemishes appearing reduced within 8 days and pores unclogged, skin texture refined and the appearance of shine controlled after 4 weeks. And you can even signup to the La Roche-Posay #ActOnAcne challenge for clever skin in 4 weeks and receive expert advice from their experts.
But lets talk about the products one by one..
The Effaclar Foaming Gel is a gentle foaming cleanser intended for oily and sensitive skin, and it can be used both morning and evening. The cleanser helps puffy the skin, gently washing away and eliminating impurities, and excess sebum while leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth. It is super gentle also as it is soap free and alcohol free and as it contains the La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water to help soothe the skin.
I haven’t been using it as my my makeup remover, so frankly I am not sure how it would cope with that, rather, I have been using it as my second cleanse for a deeper clean of my pores, as well as to give my skin a quick clean in the morning to rid the skin of any sebum build up from the night.
Next is the Serozinc Mattifying and Soothing Mist which is a designed to help target blemishes, marks and excess oiliness to help the skin feel and look fresh, helps mattify oily skin and prevent excess shine, while also tightening up the appearance of pores.
The mist contains just three ingredients; zinc sulphate (0.10%) to help heal the skin sodium chloride (0.75%) as an astringent and purified water.
The mist is intended to be used as a toner after cleansing, but before moisturising, and it is easy to use thanks to the spray bottle. But it can also be used throughout the day to help refresh and treat the skin.
I admit that I’ve gotten out of the routine of using a toner, and I think mainly as my previous ones often contained alcohol which was so drying on the skin, so I was a little curious about this one, but I have to say that I am hooked. I have mainly been using it at night after clansing my skin and again in the morning, and have also found it to be a great base for makeup as it leaves my skin matte, and prevents it from getting shiny throughout the day. I can imagine when its summer again, and my skin tends to become a little oilier again, I will love using this throughout the day too to help control the greasiness.
Next up is the Effaclar Duo (+), which is a corrective unclogging moisturiser for acne-prone skin, targeting imperfections, marks and recurrence, along with clogged pores and excess sebum.
The moisturiser is very light and oil-free and it can be used both morning and night, and immediately leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth, and with a lovely matte finish. It works as a great base under makeup too.
The moisturiser contains among others;
- Procerad to help protect against the appearance of red or brown marks
- Mannose to stimulate skin regeneration.
- APF to help restore skin’s balance.
- Niacinamide to soothe skin and decrease redness.
- Piroctone olamine to combat bacterial proliferation
- LHA and salicylic acid micro-exfoliates without irritating
- Zinc PCA to reduce sebum secretion
This is such a great moisturiser. I love how gentle it is on my skin, and that it gives my skin the moisture it needs while it works to to treat not only exisiting and future breakouts, but also help reduce the marks caused by previous breakouts. And it didn’t take long before I noticed a dramatic difference. Those breakouts that otherwise usually take forever to go away, started to clear up quicker, and those breakouts that I have had, generally are a lot smaller and not as ‘angry’ as previously. I also find that when my skin appears to be less greasy, and when using this moisturiser under my makeup, regardless of the type, it stays looking fresh for longer.
Then there’s the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mask, which is a clay mask made with mamong others kaolin, to help draw out excess sebum and impurities while helping to control shine. The white clay mask is quite thick, and I actually love that it works in just 5 minutes. And after each use, I can clearly see how my skin appears more refined and less greasy, and using it just once or twice a week, I do feel it has made a significant difference to my skin, as it generally seems less greasy and looks so much healthier.
Finally, there’s the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Teint Mineral Compact Foundation, which is a foundation made of 100 per cent mineral pigments offering high coverage without irritating the skin or clogging up the pores.
I admit that I tend to prefer liquid foundations, and I don’t really know why, but I have to say that I’ve been impressed with this compact. It easily does give the skin a great coverage, and covers up just about anything from pigmentation, redness, and breakouts too, while evening out the skin and leaving it looking natural. It as a has a lovely matte finish, but without looking cakey or dry and ‘flat’ on the skin, which I find powder foundations often are, but not this one. And I also find that it helps control my oil production throughout the day, to the point that I’ve actually not been needing a touchup during the day. I have also been using it on top of my existing foundations or BB Creams, both to get a tad more coverage on the areas where I particularly need it, but also as a setting powder, and again, it has helped mattify my skin for the day.
It comes in a sleek looking black compact, and I love that it is made with 100% percent natural minerals and doesn’t block my blemish prone skin as it is non-comedogenic. It comes with SPF25 which is great, though a higher SPF would be even better under the harsh Aussie sun. There are sadly only four shades in the range, of which I tried the shade Sand Beige, which is a great match for my medium beige skin tone. I really like this foundation, and the coverage it gives my skin while feeling so comfortable, and while I may repurchase again, I do think I will also look into their liquid foundations to see how they perform, for a a lighter everyday alternative.
Overall, I am quite impressed with these products from La Roche-Posay. They really have helped clear up my skin to the point I feel my breakouts are not as larger or ‘angry’ and more, and they are less frequent too, and overall, I feel that my skin is also less greasy, which means that my makeup looks not just better but also lasts longer. And even without makeup, my skin is generally simply looking so much healthier. I will without a doubt purchase these products again.
