I have always struggled with my skin, with breakouts and acne, so for me, regular face masks are a requirement to keep my skin looking and feeling clearer, and less greasy too. I have always been particularly fond of clay masks, simply as they have always seemed better at drawing out more impurities from my skin.
And recently a new brand hit the market, Generation Clay*, so needless to say that I was excited when I was able to put the three varieties in the range to the test. Generation Clay is an Australian brand that makes use of the Australian outback’s pure pink kaolin clay, purple bentonite clay and white activated charcoal, along with super potent ingredients from Kakadu Plum ad Desert Lime, for natural face masks that help achieve healthy and glowing skin.
The dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, non-irritating, masks are not just gentle on the skin, (not least thanks to being alcohol free and not containing harsh chemicals including parabens), they are also cruelty free.
There are three different masks in the range;
- Detoxifying Charcoal Clay Mask
- Urban Defence Purifying Pink Clay Mask
- Ultra Violet Brightening Purple Clay Mask
- The Detoxifying Charcoal Clay Mask is perfect for those with blemish-prone or oily skin. The key ingredient is the all-natural activated charcoal, which detoxifies the skin by working like a magnet to draw out dirt, toxins and impurities from the pores, but without stripping the skin of its natural oils. The mask also contains witch hazel to help absorb oil, reduce acne and existing breakouts and minimise the appearance of oil, Old Man Weed to help fight acne bacteria, aloe Vera, marshmallow and cucumber to help soothe the skin. The mask also contains Vitamin A to help fight the signs of ageing, along with lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, which helps give the skin a gentle chemical exfoliation, ridding the skin of dead skin cells, unclogging pores and thus also helps reduce acne breakouts, and helps with a more even skin.
- This mask is perfect for my skin, and I’ve loved using it especially not the t-zone area where I particularly struggle with oily, congested skin and breakouts. It clearly helps give my skin a very deep clean, yet without any irritation or drying out my skin. And after each use my skin is clearer and more refined too. The mask comes in the charcoal jar, and the charcoal coloured mask has a typical charcoal scent, it doesn’t smell amazing, but not offensive either.
- The Urban Defence Purifying Pink Clay Mask is using pink clay as its key ingredient, and it is great for those with dehydrated or sensitive skin, Viking the skin a deep clean, drawing out impurities. The mask also contains Kakadu plum, which is high in vitamin C, to help reduce hyper pigmentation thus brightening the skin, stimulate collagen and protect from free radicals. It also contains Old Man Weed to help fight acne bacteria, aloe vera to soothe and vitamin E to moisturise and fight free radicals, while also contains Vitamin A to fight the signs of ageing and lactic acid to exfoliate and keep the skin clear.
- Thanks to the clay, I have also felt that this mask is great for helping draw out impurities sin my skin and thereby help clear breakouts, and after each use, my pores appear smaller and my skin feels so soft and is clearly looking brighter and more glowing. This mask comes in the gorgeous pink jar, and it has the most beautiful delicate rose scent.
- Finally, there’s the Ultra Violet Brightening Purple Clay Mask, intended for those with dull or patchy skin. The key ingredient is the purple bentonite clay to help give the skin a deep clean, along with Desert Lime to hydrate and stimulate collagen, Davidson Plum to brighten and rejuvenate dull tired skin. In addition, it also contains aloe vera to soothe and Vitamin E to moisturise and fight free radicals and witch hazel to purify the skin and pores, along with AHA (lactic acid) to gently exfoliate the skin and brightening dull skin lightening dark spots and pigmentation for a more even skin tone.
- It leaves my skin feeling clear and refined, but also looking brighter and and more alive and awake. The mask comes in a gorgeous purple jar - ultra violet, the Pantone shade of the year, and the purple mask has a slightly odd clay scent, which again is neither gorgeous, nor unpleasant. I would have liked it to have a lovely scent, but on the other hand, still much prefer it not to contain artificial fragrance
The masks are easy to apply, and I love that they come with little individual brushes to make application even easier. They need to be applied to clean, dry skin and left for about 10 minutes to dry. Unlike other clay masks they don’t dry to the point they completely crack on the skin, which I’ve never been fond off, but rather they remain slightly tacky. They are easy to fine off using lukewarm water.
Overall, I am seriously enjoying these masks and I love how they are targeting different issues, though thanks to the clay or charcoal contents, they still help clear out excess oil and immunities for the skin, so regardless of the type, still give your skin a good deep clean - and this is also why I do find it difficult to say which is my favourite.
The Detoxifying mask is perfect for my blemish prone skin, the Urban Defence Clay Mask has the most gorgeous scent, but if I really had to pick it would have be the Brightening Clay mask, for the pure reason that it is helping with both my breakouts, while also targeting my dull skin with increasing pigmentation, making it radiant and glowing after each use.
You can of course always multi-mask by applying different masks to different areas of the face, thereby targeting difference concerns, i.e Detoxifying Charcoal Mask on the t-zone and Brightening Mask on the cheeks.
