My two little boys are very blonde and fair, and have sadly both inherited their father’s dry and sensitive skin. But worst is our 3 year old. At one point he was admitted to the Children’s Hospital as he developed a bad rash all over his body. But thankfully it disappeared as quickly as it came, with no real explanation. We have however been told that his slightly rough and dry skin can be a result of his medical treatment, including all the chemo and steroids that he received in the lead up to his bone marrow transplant three years ago. And therefore, finding the correct skincare for both of them, but especially for the 3 year old is so important. We have tried a lot of different brands, and always make sure to select gentle, products, but what made a tremendous difference, was the day we started using the Mustela range for very sensitive skin.
Mustela is a French brand who continually over the past 60 years has been conducting dermatological research into caring for the sensitive skin of babies, children and expecting mums, with clinical proven results. Mustela also strives to use natural ingredients with products using a high percentage of natural ingredients, and all free of parabens, perfumes, silicones, phthalates and all other chemical ingredients that can harm or irritate sensitive skin
We tried a selection of products from the Mustela Soothing range, which all contain among others avocado to help reinforce the skin’s barrier to preserve its richness, along with schizandra to help soothe and improve the appearance and sensations of very sensitive skin, including reddening, skin sighting and tingling. And I love that they are so gentle that they can be used even on newborns.
The Mustela Soothing Cleansing Gel* is a cleanser that can be used for both body and hair, which we have also been using it for, as my little boys rash also came out in his hairline and neck. The gel-like cleanser is using 98% natural ingredients and is fragrance free, It is quite concentrated so you only need to use the smallest amount, which is easy thanks to the pump bottle.. And even immediately out of the bath or shower, before moisturising, my boys skin is left feeling clean and soft and smooth.
The Mustela Soothing Moisturising Body Lotion* is made using 97% natural ingredients. It has next to no scent, which I really like. The light formula absorbs quickly into my boys skin, without any greasiness or stickiness, and it immediately leaves it feeling so soft and smooth. It is recommended to use morning and evening, and with all other moisturisers I’ve used on him, I’ve had to do that, to keep his skin from being dry - but after just a few uses, it has simply been enough to use it daily after he has been cleaned, Incredible the difference it has made.
We have also used the Mustela Soothing Moisturising Face Cream*, which as the name suggests is intended to be used the face. And I here have to say that I love that a face cream is available. As a skincare lover, I could never imagine using a body lotion in my face, so love the fact that I wont have to with my little boys either, but that there is a specifically designed face cream available too.
Now, neither of my boys have got particular dry skin on their faces (its concentrated on their bodies), but even so, using this rich, yet light cream has made a big difference, and their skin on their faces simply looks so much healthier. The cream is made with 97% natural ingredients, and again, is quite concentrated, and in spite of its richness, it absorbs without any greasiness.
Finally, there’s the Mustela Soothing Cleansing Wipes*, which are designed for to be used on both face, body and nappy area. Thankfully my 3yo, the only one still in nappies, have never struggled with nappy rash, or skin irritations on the bum, so have been using these predominantly on his face and other body, and they are without a doubt the most gentle baby wipes I have ever used on him, also thanks to being 99% natural.
Overall, I really cannot rave enough about these products. I wish I ad known of them when my boys skin was at its worst during his many months admitted at the hospital and receiving chemo treatment, and in the months following. But even with his skin was ‘ok’, when we started using these Mustela products, the roughness and slightly bumpy feeling, along with the dryness, has more or less vanished, and his is skin is the best it has ever been. I think it is safe to say that I will never use any other products on him.
Yes, these products are slightly more expensive than other baby products on the market, but if you trust me, if you saw they difference they have made to my boys skin, you’ll agree that they are worth every cent.
What I also love about the Mustela range, is that babies’ and childrens’ skin is different too, so there are several difference ranges available, including for Gentle for Normal Skin, Nourishing for Dry Skin, Stelatopia for eczema prone skin, along with more targeted products for things like cradle cap, and barrier creams.
When I next stock up on these Soothing products for my 3 year old, I’ll be sure to grab the products for normal skin for my 5 year old to use as well, as I can only imagine the good they’d do to his skin too.
