PRODUCT REVIEW: THE PERFECT SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR AGEING BREAKOUT PRONE SKIN - WITH MEDIK8 CLEANSING OIL, PORE CLEANSE GEL INTENSE, PORE MINIMISING TONIC, REFINING MOISTURISER AND NIGHT RITUAL VITAMIN A

Ok, you’ve heard it from me countless times, but one of the cosmeceutical brands that I really love is Medik8 - for the pure reason that their products are always so efficient, and have done wonders for my pigmented ageing yet blemish prone skin.

I’ve put a selection of their newest products to the test, including;

  • Medik8 Lipid-Balance Cleansing Oil
  • Medik8 Pore Cleanse Gel Intense
  • Medik8 Pore Minimising Tonic
  • Medik8 Refining Moisturiser
  • Medik8 Night Ritual Vitamin A

Let’s start with the Lipid-Balance Cleansing Oil, which is a gentle oil cleanser that helps gently dissolve and remove impurities, sunscreen and makeup, including long-wearing and waterproof makeup, while leaving the skin feeling soft and supple.

The Oil Cleanser contains a combination of nourishing, healing, protecting and cleansing active ingredients, along with linoleic acid for its anti-inflammatory properties, safflower oil which is rich in vitamin E to help condition the skin, and Moringa oil to deeply cleanse and draw out dirt and impurities.

The Oil Cleanser is best used by massaging a small amount into dry skin, to loosen up all impurities and makeup, before adding a little water to emulsify, and finally washing it off with water. Once it has been washed off, small amounts of fatty acids are left behind to nourish and restore the skin's natural lipid levels, to help replenish the skin’s natural defence barrier, and also offering anti-pollution benefits and essential antioxidant protection, protecting it from heavy metals, cigarette smoke and so forth.

I really love using oil cleansers to remove my makeup, as I simply find them so much more efficient than regular cleansers, making sure my skin is completely clean, something that is an essential part for me, in making sure that my skin doesn’t break out. And I have to say that this Medik8 cleanser is one of the best I’ve used. It is very concentrated so you only need the smallest amount, and unlike other cleansers, I after the first cleanse, my skin is completely clean, soft and smooth, and clearly nourished from the active ingredients. I also love that whilst it is cleansing my skin, it is also caring for it, and helps protect if from further environmental damage and signs of ageing. I also love its gentle floral scent and that it comes in an easy to use pump bottle.

Although my skin is completely clean after using the Oil Cleanser, I always like to double cleanse, using a more intense treatment cleanser as may second cleanse, and the new Medik8 Pore Cleanse Gel Intense is absolutely perfect for that and to help with my breakout prone skin.

It contains among others Red Clover Extract help reduce sebum production, enhances cellular turnover and acts as a natural astringent to minimise the appearance of pores, Salicylic Acid to help decongest and exfoliate the skin and break down the excess oil and skin cells that can lead to blemishes and blocked pores, along with L-Mandelic Acid, and AHA and BHA that has exfoliating properties to help exfoliate the surface of the skin as well as within pores for a deeper but gentle exfoliation.

I am absolutely loving using this cleanser, and I can clearly feel that using this as my second cleanse at night, as as my cleanser in my morning, my skin is so much clearer, with less breakouts. And after each use my skin is not just softer and smoother it is also more refined. I also feel that daily use, has made my skin less greasy - yet without drying it out or irritating it - and with my skin being less greasy, I also feel that my makeup stays put loving nicer and shine-free for longer. I’ll definitely be looking into repurchasing this again.

After each cleanse, I’ve been using the new Medik8 Pore Minimising Tonic. This Tonic is to be used after cleansing the skin, morning and evening, and is best used by applying a small amount onto a cotton pad and sweeping it across the face and neck, avoiding the delicate eye area, before applying your usual serums and moisturisers.

The Tonic is a purifying toner that contains among others Red Clover Extract, a natural astringent which also helps reduce the sebum production, and Alpha-Lipoic Acid, an antioxidant that helps protects the skin from premature ageing caused by the environment and UV rays, while also stimulating cellular energy to help prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin for a firmer complexion. Finally, it also contains L-Lactic Acid, an AHA that helps gently exfoliate the skin, to keep the pores clear and the skin hydrated and nourished.

I admit that I often neglect using a toner, but I’ve been so loving using this one. It only adds a few moments to your skincare routine, but it is clearly helping keep my pores clearer, prevent clogged and congested pores, and also make my skin less greasy, and thereby helping reduce the amount and the size of the breakouts I’ve been getting. My skin is also noticeably softer and smoother and more refined, and has healthy glow. This is one of the more expensive toners I’ve used, but thankfully a little goes a long way, so the bottle will last you a while. Again, I’ll definitely be looking into repurchasing this again as I love how it makes my skin feel and look.

The next step is moisturiser. During the day, I’ve been using Medik8 Refining Moisturiser (on top of the Medik8 Super C30+ Intense, which you can read more about here).

The Refining Moisturiser is a fantastic moisturiser for those like me with combination to oily skin prone to breakouts. The actual moisturiser contains among others the Red Clover Extract to help minimise the appearance of pores, reduce sebum production, and enhance cellular turnover along with Hyaluronic Acid to leave the skin keep the skin retain moisture and keep it nourished, and linoleic acid to help block the production of sebum to minimise oily skin and enlarged pores while restoring balance and hydration to the complexion. Finally, it also contains L-Mandelic Acid to help gently exfoliate the skin,

The actual moisturiser has a slightly odd scent, but its thankfully is quite subtle still and fades quickly. It comes in a pump tube, which I admit that I really like as it is so easy to use. However, , from past experiences using Medik8 moisturisers in the same style pump tubes, it is near impossible to completely empty out the tube - last time, when the tube appeared empty, I ended up cutting the tube open and found enough moisturiser left to last me almost a week, and I do find that rather wasteful, and even more so considering it is not a cheap moisturiser - so regardless of how easy the pump is to use, I would actually prefer a standard tube!

Anyway, the actual moisturiser is super light, and absorbs into the skin immediately, and leaves the skin soft and smooth and with a nice matte finish, that also makes it the perfect base for makeup during the day, again helping to keep my makeup looking fresh and matte throughout the day too. I love that it helps normalise my sebum production and tighten and keep my pores clearer while keeping my skin moisturised and soft at the same time. Often moisturisers that works to keep the skin clearer can be very drying and irritating on the skin, so I really love that this one helps keep my pores clear with the gentle exfoliation, reduce the excess sebum production, while still being so gentle on my skin and giving it the moisture and nourishment it needs. I love how this moisturiser gives my skin the moisture and nourishment it needs, but keeps my skin clear and matte, so again, I’ll definitely consider repurchasing this one again.

Finally, at night I’ve been using the Medik8 Night Ritual Vitamin A (on top of the Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6, which you can read more about here)

The Medik8 Night Ritual Vitamin A is a night cream that contains among others 0.2% retinol, to help boost collagen levels and improve the skin’s own regenerative cycle for a more even toned and youthful skin. It also contains Dragon Fruit Extract, for its antioxidant protection and to help let and tone the skin, along with Vitamin E to help fight free radicals and stabilise the retinol.

The cream contains pure, all-trans retinol, the most effective form of retinol, Night Ritual Vitamin A features entry-level 0.2% retinol which is low enough to not cause irritation yet high enough to see significant results. Retinoids often can be very drying and irritating on the skin, but this night cram has a unique Time Release Technology that helps distribute the retinol evenly and slowly throughout the night, to reduce any irritation or redness. Even so, as with all products containing retinol, it is always advised to take it slow and slowly increase use, starting by using it twice a week for the first 2 weeks, every other night for the next 2 weeks, then every night until the skin is fully customised to it. (Please also note that retinol can make the skin extra sensitive to the sun, as well as it is not recommended for use if you’re pregnant or lactating).

Retinol is such a wonder ingredient, and my skin is very used to using, so I immediately went to using it nightly, and without any issues. The retinol helps to among others speeding up the skin cell cycle, helping to push fresh skin cells to the surface for a refined and even toned complexion, as well as stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to help plump out fine lines and wrinkles for a skin that is generally smoother and more youthful.

The Night Ritual Vitamin A comes in a gorgeous white frosted jar, and has a little spatula, which I really like so you don’t have to use your fingers. It also has a slightly odd slightly spicy scent, but again, thankfully it is subtle and does fade quickly once absorbed into the skin.

Often night creams, and even more so anti-anti-ageing ones are are very rich heavy, which sadly my ageing skin is really not liking - so I was pleasantly surprised when I realised that this night cream is rather light and absorbs without any greasiness. It absorb quickly too, and leaves the skin immediately feeling soft and smooth. And each morning I wake, I feel that my skin is looking more even in tone. I also feel that it is no longer as dull looking but rather fresh and glowing, and also intensely moisturised, yet without feeling drowned in moisture, and consequently, it also looks more plump. I can also also clearly feel that the retinol cream helps make my skin be less greasy and reduce breakouts.

This is a great night and my skin is clearly enjoying it, and certainly great to use on top of my usual higher strength Retinol serum, for added intensity, but without irritating my skin. I love that this night cream is not to heavy or intense for my combination breakout prone skin, and I love how it my skin look younger and more radiant, so I will again definitely consider repurchasing, although it would be great if Medik8 had a slightly stronger version available too for those used to the low strength version.
