Product Review: Estee Lauder Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator

Moving to Australia over a decade ago, the harsh sun has no doubt been very hard on my sensitive Scandinavian skin, and as a consequence I sadly have pigmentation that seems to be increasing by the day. I have been using the Estee Lauder Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator since it was launched in the middle of 2011, and have since then re-purchased it several times. Recently I was lucky to win a massive pack of beauty products, which all won the Best in Beauty 2012 award, (if you haven't seen my haul, you can see it here) - and this pack included another bottle of the Idealist serum, and this has prompted me to finally do a review. Here are my thoughts;

What They Say:
Instantly: redness is reduced, skin looks fresh and radiant. In just 2 weeks: 62% of women showed a significant improvement in skintone in a clinical test. Over time: skin looks noticeably clearer and brighter, vibrant and more even-toned. This intensive, yet gentle oil-free serum features powerful technologies to address the look of every key sign of uneven skintone: Triple-Optic Technology provides skin with a brighter, more luminous look from the very first application. CorrectTone Technology visibly reduces uneven skintone in 2 weeks, while anti-oxidants help prevent its re-appearance.

RRP: 30ml: $80, 50ml: $115 - Available from department stores, and Estee Lauder Online

What I Say:

I have combination skin, and have a fair bit of pigmented areas on my face, which just seems to be getting worse and worse year by year, and add to this dark spots and scars from past acne.

Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator comes in the hard plastic bottle, which is turquoise and has slight iridescence to it. It has a gold lid, and underneath you find a hygienic pump dispenser.

And I really love creams which come with a pump dispenser, as it is more hygienic than if in a jar, and when you are paying a lot of money for your serum, the last thing you want is for it to spoil and get contaminated before you get a chance to finish the product.

The product itself has a nice citrus scent, which I really love. This scent is however still very faint and gently and quickly disappears once the serum has absorbed.

According to Estee Lauder, the serum needs to be applied on clean skin, and then followed with an SPF moisturiser, and for maximum results use AM and PM for the first 12 weeks, then continue with your regular Estee Lauder regimen, using Even Skintone Illuminator every AM. If you use Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum at night (which I do) continue to apply it first, then follow with Even Skintone Illuminator, and hereafter apply your moisturiser.

The serum has a creamy texture, and is beige with a nice pearlescent gleam. At first I was very worried about the shimmer, thinking that I would look like a disco queen, but that was not the case. The serum leaves the skin with a nice glow and sheen, without making the skin looking greasy. This sheen however does more or less seem to disappear when applying foundation afterwards, so this the illumination is partly due to the presence of the shimmer particles in the serum.

The serum is very concentrated, and I found that I needed less than two pumps to cover my whole face. In terms of hydration, the serum is not very hydrating, but it is also intended as a serum to be used under the moisturiser.
Even Skintone Illuminator works well under makeup and stops the foundation from settling into fine lines as well as it makes my makeup stay put throughout the day, without added grease.

When taking my make up off at night and when waking up in the morning, my skin has felt soft and smooth to touch with a nice glow.

Already in the first few days of using the serum, I started to see a difference with clearly reduced the appearance of pigmentation and pores, and some dark marks from past acne. I had several dark spots which now seems significantly reduced in appearance, and I can see a clear improvement in my skins overall tone and my skin is brighter and more glowing. As for my acne scarring, while it has not completely removed these, they are looking smaller and better than they ever had.

So all in all I am very impressed with this product, and the Even Skintone Illuminator really does live up to its claims, as it has reduced the appearance of my pigmentation and marks from acne, - The results speaks for themselves, so I will definitely continue to use this serum, as day by day, my skin tone continues to become more and more even.

The serum used to be $105 for 30ml or $150 for 50ml, but has recently been reduced in price to $80 30ml and $115 for 50ml, which is fantastic news. Still, the serum is a little on the pricey side, however, as a little goes a very long way, and a bottle will last you a very long time.

I really love this serum and what it has done to the look of my skin, so I will continue to purchase it, and if uneven skin tone and pigmentation is an issue for you too, then I recommend that you try it too. You’ll love it!

Have you tried the Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator? What product(s) have you found to be most efficient in the battle against pigmentation and uneven skin tone?

Product Review: bhave Fresh Ends

I have long hair, down to the middle of my back, and in spite of trying my best to look after it with regular treatments and haircuts, there is no denying that over the years it has been through tremendous abuse through numerous session colourings at the hair salon, and not to mention the daily tear and wear from blow drying and heat styling it. The ends are as a consequence therefore often a little dry, frizzy and stressed. To protect the ends of my long hair, I therefore always use a leave-in conditioner, so when I was asked to trial the *bhave Fresh Ends, I of course happily accepted. Here are my thoughts;

What They Say:
"Smooths, repairs, seals and controls misbehaving split ends with slow releasing ceratonia peptides, keratin and certified organic argan oil. Helps control flyaways without weighing down the hair. Suitable for distressed and damaged ends. Used after blow-drying or styling. Smoothes and repairs split ends. Improve strength and elasticity. Leaves hair soft & silky".

RRP: $32.95 (50ml) - Available from select hair salons.

What I Say:
I recently reviewed several other products from behave, including the Hydrator Shampoo and Conditioner, Magnify Shampoo and Conditioner, Bombshell Blonde Shampoo, Leave-In Crème, and Deep Intense Conditioning Masque, and as I have really fallen in love with all of these products, because they are just so amazing, I inevitably had high hopes for the Fresh Ends as well.

Fresh Ends contain slow releasing ceretonia peptide, a slow releasing peptide/amino acid. Peptides attach to the hair cuticle after washing and bond with chemically treated hair to repair some of the damage. They bond more wherever damage is greater for optimal conditioning at all times – the greater the damage, the greater the binding but without build-up.

The leave-in crème also contains certified organic argan oil, high in vitamin E, essential fatty acids and anti-oxidants, to moisturise and nourish the hair.

Fresh Ends also contain macadamia oil, which helps prevent against hair breakage while improving hair strength and elasticity. It also contains certified organic aloe vera, which soothes and balances the scalp and hair, and delivers gentle natural hydration, whilst restoring pH levels.

The final, and most important hero ingredient in Fresh Ends is the replicine functional keratin. Keratin is the protein hair and nails are made of, and added to hair styling products it can help strengthen and add shine and control to the hair.

Derived from sheep’s wool, functional keratin works to improve the condition of the hair. The molecules aren’t broken down, which means that instead of being absorbed, they wrap around the hair, making it smooth and shiny and protecting it from heat damage.

Like the rest of the bhave product range, Fresh Ends is free from parabens, sulphates and sodium chloride, as well as it is Australian owned and made, and not being tested on animals, which earns it a large handful of bonus points from me.

The behave Fresh Ends in a very stylish silver jar, which looks so luxurious, and reminds more of an expensive facial cream than a hair product.

The jar has a big pump in the centre of the top, which dispenses the hair treatment. It is so easy to use, and so easy to get just the amount needed without wasting any product. You could imagine that it would be impossible to completely empty the jar, but as you can completely unscrew the lid, that won’t be a problem.

The Fresh Ends has a very subtle creamy scent, which more or less disappears once absorbed into the hair.

The instructions on the jar recommend using the Fresh Ends in dry hair, although it can also be used in towel-dried hair. It is also recommended to use sparingly – and honestly, only the smallest amount is needed, so the jar will last a very long time. If too much is needed the hair ends up feeling a little greasy.

The Fresh Ends is a thick cream, which can leave you thinking that it will leave the hair feeling and looking very greasy or weighing it down, but that is far from the case. It instantly absorbs into the ends of the hair, and once dry, my hair is left looking and feeling soft, shiny and healthy.
As I usually wash my hair every second day, I have been using the bhave Leave-in Crème on the days I wash my hair, and the following day, I have been using the Fresh Ends in ends of my dry hair. And after using the Fresh Ends for a few weeks, I am happy to say that I feel that the condition of my hair seems to have improved. The ends of my hair simply feel and look healthier and more moisturised – almost as if the hair has just been cut. My hair is shiny and any frizz is dramatically reduced, and I do not feel that it is in any way building up in my hair or weighing it down.
All in all this is a truly amazing treatment for distressed, dry, split and damaged ends, and it has made an amazing difference to difference to the condition of my ends, will definitely look into buying the Fresh Ends again.

Product Review: The Jojoba Company Jojoba Oil

I have previously done a post on my Top Five Favourite Beauty Oils, which included the Jojoba oil from the Jojoba Company – and as I truly love this wonder multi-tasking oil so much, I thought it was time to do a full review. Here are my thoughts;

What They Say:
"Youthful skin produces wax esters that are responsible for the deep cleansing and moisturising of skin, hair and nails. Up to 30% of healthy young skin sebum is made up of wax esters. As we grow older, wax ester production begins to slow down. As a result, the functions of wax esters are lost, allowing moisture to escape from skin cells. This begins the aging process of skin.

Jojoba is the only plant known to produce wax esters instead of plant oil. Its molecular structure is similar to the wax esters in youthful skin sebum. Jojoba is naturally hypoallergenic and contains powerful antioxidants, Omega 6 & 9 fatty acids, and Vitamins A, D and E. As a result, when jojoba is applied to skin, it puts back what aging takes away, working immediately to begin restoring youthful looking skin, naturally.

Jojoba moisturises lips, face, hands, cuticles, body and hair, leaving skin smooth and hair silky. Apply jojoba to wet or dry skin, hair and nails".

RRP: 30ml/85ml/100ml/200ml - $19.95/$29.95/$29.95/$39.95 – Available from selected health food stores and chemists.

What I Say:
The Jojoba oil from The Jojoba Company Jojoba Oil is Australian made from 100% Natural Australian Jojoba, and it contains no harmful detergents, chemicals, parabens, artificial fragrances, colours, PEGs, mineral oils, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), or animal products, which instantly makes me give it bonus points.

The Jojoba oil is such a versatile oil that can be used to moisturise and nourish ageing skin. It can be used as a massage oil, to remove make-up, to relieve and heal rashes and to condition hair, scalp, hands and cuticles.

Face
Having combination skin prone to breakouts, and as my skin is a little oilier during summer, I was a little worried using this oil in my face but I have to say that it left my skin feeling extremely soft and moisturised , although a little on the greasy side. Worn under makeup, I found my skin started to get a little too shiny too quickly and my makeup would slide a lot earlier than it normally would so I would really recommend using it as a moisturiser only for those with very dry skin, or perhaps during winter, when skin tends to be a little drier.

Décolletage
I started using the Jojoba oil on my décolletage, which is starting to show the ageing effects of the Australian sun, with some smaller lines and pigmentation. And I have to say that I am impressed, as the décolletage area has really benefited from the added moisture, looking healthier and firmer, whilst it is still too soon to say if it has made any difference to pigmentation and fine lines.

Makeup Remover
I used Jojoba oil as makeup remover for waterproof eye makeup including mascara and it removed all traces easily without rubbing or pulling the sensitive eye area, and it leaves the delicate area soft and moisturised.

Nails and Cuticles
The Jojoba oil also works fantastic as a nail and cuticle oil, and only the tiniest amount is required. Although it does take a little while to absorb, it does leave cuticles and hands looking and feeling hydrated and healthy.

Hair

The Jojoba oil also works brilliantly as a hair treatment to condition dry hair, either put in the hair prior to shampooing, and it will have the same effect as a the old fashioned ‘hot oils’.

When used as a treatment in dry hair, only a very small amount, otherwise the hair will end up looking very greasy, but I see that as a good thing, as then my bottle will last much longer!

My hair and in particularly dry ends instantly absorbed the oil as an intense treatment, smoothing down any frizz, and leaving my hair looking healthy and glossy, giving it a much needed moisture boost, without weighing it down. And after washing my hair, it still felt and looked healthier and can truly see the benefits from frequent use of this oil.

The Jojoba oil comes in a glass bottle with a pump dispenser, which makes it very easy to use, although it tends to drip a little which can make the glass bottle a little oily and slippery. It has a nice subtle scent and natural scent, which once absorbed the scent completely disappears. The concentrated oil is easy to use and therefore only the smallest amount is needed and therefore a bottle will seriously last you a very long time.

This Jojoba oil is truly an essential multi-tasker that should be kept in every bathroom!

Product Review: Aphelia Luminance 11+7 Whitening & Lightening Crème

Having increasing pigmentation I was very excited when I was asked to trial the Aphelia Luminance 11+7 Whitening & Lightening Crème.

Here are my thoughts;

What They Say:
Luminance’s calming and cooling complexes redress redness and neutralise stressors, for more balanced, even and lustrous skin tone. Protective and gentle re-brightening and lightening unguents defend skin, for diminishing pigmentation, dark spot, redness, age spots, sun spots and redress acne scarring. Luminance contains the potent anti-oxidant Vitamin C, to help protect cells from free-radical damage (pigmentation & dark spots). Specifically designed for dark spot correction, pigmentation and damaged skin.

RRP: $69 (30ml) – Available from Aphelia Online

What I Say:
Aphelia products are made using pure, natural herbal power that has been combined with cosmetic science. The ingredients are hand selected and are then expressed and percolated into own concentrated extracts using the traditional Asian methodologies. The products from Aphelia represent a hand crafted, east meets west fusions of holistic tradition and modern science, - ancient oriental herbal knowledge fused with the latest developments in Western skin care technology, giving you the best of both worlds.

The Luminance Cream promises to diminish pigmentation, dark spot, redness, age spots, sun spots and redress acne scarring - and as I sadly can tick a box at every one of those issues, and having previously tried and been extremely impressed by the Aphelia Peony 9+5 Eye Cream, I was very excited to trial the Aphelia Luminance 11+7 Crème.

The Aphelia Luminance 11+7 Crème comes in a bright green box with gold writing, and Chinese (I assume!) writing down one side of the box, and on the other side the words "The Origin of Beauty".  On the last side of the box, the ingredients of the cream and the instructions are listed. I remember the first time I saw one of these green boxes (when I tried the Aphelia Luscious Intensive Hand & Skin Cream), I recall not having high expectations of what I would find inside….but much to my surprise I found a lovely and luxurious looking cream.

The Luminance Crème comes in a square gold plastic bottle with a pump, and although made from plastic, it looks like it is made from glass, and is sleek and simple looking and looks expensive and luxurious. And I love the fact that it comes with a pump, as it is very hygienic, although this may consequently make it a little difficult to use up every last drop of cream, but only time will tell. One negative is that there is no way of knowing how much cream is left in the bottle.

Unlike a lot of other brands, Aphelia actually lists on the pack when the product has been manufactured, as well as when it expired, which I really do like. I wish that was requirement for all skincare and cosmetics products.

The crème only has a slight but pleasant scent which quickly fades. It is very gentle and did not cause any irritation to my very sensitive eyes what so ever.

Aphelia Luminance 11+7 contains 11 advanced herbal brightening ingredients to reduce pigment imperfections, dark spots, age spots, and blotchiness.

The key herbal extracts in the Luminance cream are, Morinda Citrifolia, better known as Noni fruit, which is an exotic natural source of a multitude of nutrients including antioxidant vitamin C.

It also contains Polygonatum Sibiricum, which is famed for its re-moistening capabilities in Chinese therapies; nourishing the yin. It has soothing and calming qualities.

The Cera Alba is pure beeswax that provides a protective barrier to damage and dryness.

Chrysanthemum Morifolium, which contains antioxidants that strengthen and protect cells, as well as lightening and re-brightening constituents.

Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract, also known as cucumber extract, which has cooling and firming hydrating actions.

As well as Yeast Extract, which is an intensely nutritious concentrated source of vitamins and nutrients, and perfect for refining and caressing the skin.

You can see the full list of ingredients here.

The cream, which actually has a consistency like a serum, has a light feel when applied to my face, and it absorbs instantly without leaving the skin feeling greasy or sticky. Although the main purpose of Luminance is to fade discolourations, scars and pigmentation, it also contains some moisturising ingredients. However, I didn’t find it moisturising enough on its own, so consequently used it as a serum and always use my normal day or night cream on top.

After a couple of weeks of using the cream twice a day, I started noticing how radiant my skin looked – even without makeup, and I also started to get comments from other people. Small pigmentation and brown spots have disappeared, while darker marks have considerably reduced in size. Scarring from past acne and blemishes also appear to have softened in look. My skin is simply looking softer, smoother, and more glowing. I am impressed and can’t wait to see the improvements in my skin with continued use of this wonder cream!!

Product Review: bhave Deep Intense Conditioning Masque

I have long hair, down to the middle of my back, and although it is in a fairly good condition, there is no denying that over the years it has been through tremendous abuse through numerous session colourings at the hair salon, and not to mention the daily tear and wear from blow drying and heat styling it. The ends are as a consequence therefore often a little dry, frizzy and stressed. To protect the ends of my long hair, I therefore do my best to use an intensive treatment once a week, so when I was asked to trial the *bhave Deep Intense Conditioning Masque, I of course happily accepted. Here are my thoughts;

What They Say:
bhave™ Deep Intense Conditioning Masque provides hair with intense moisture and repair. It is enriched with certified organic argan oil, macadamia oil, vitamin E, and keratin to work within the hair’s structure to restore elasticity, improve strength, and boost shine and is particularly beneficial for stressed, coloured or damaged hair.

RRP: $41.95 (170g) – available from select hair salons

What I Say:
I recently reviewed the bhave Hydrator Shampoo and Conditioner, the Magnify Shampoo and Conditioner, the Bombshell Blonde Shampoo, and the Leave-in crème, and as I have really really loved every single one of those products, I automatically had very high hopes for the Deep Intense Conditioning Masque.

The Deep Intense Conditioning Masque contains certified organic argan oil, high in vitamin E, essential fatty acids and anti-oxidants, to moisturise, nourish and add shine to the hair. The masque also contains keratin and macadamia oil to help prevent against hair breakage while improving hair strength and elasticity.

Like the rest of the bhave product range, the Deep Intense Conditioning Masque is free from parabens, sulphates and sodium chloride, as well as it is Australian owned and made, and not being tested on animals.

The instructions on the box as well as on the tube recommends using the Conditioning Masque in damp hair after shampooing, and ideally leave in for 5-10 minutes to ensure the hair benefits fully from the intense treatment, before rinsing thoroughly. I have however found that the masque works even better if used with a shower cap so the heat can help the treatment penetrate better into the hair.

The Deep Intense Conditioning Masque comes in a stylish silver tube, which is designed to stand on its lid which I really like as it means that the product drops down and I can use every last drop in the tube. The tube comes in a simplistic and stylish matte look white box with bhave engraved in the box, and a lime green colour on one side of the box.

The Deep Intense Conditioning Masque is a thick cream, and you can almost feel the goodness in the masque as in instantly absorbs into the hair.

Being so thick and creamy, you could imagine the treatment being difficult to rinse out, but that is not the case – it rinses out easily, without leaving behind a greasy residue (unless it is because my hair has been so dry that it has simply absorbed it all!!) After rinsing the treatment out, my hair is extremely easy to comb, and once dry I was surprised at how soft my hair actually felt – it was soft like silk and so shiny and so much healthier looking. Even the ends of my hair felt and looked so quenched with moisture.

So far just using this treatment in my hair once a week, I have not noticed my hair to become suffocated with build-up, on the contrary, I really feel that it is improving the health and look of my hair.

The Deep Intense Conditioning Masque has a subtle scent reminiscent of coconuts (the product does actually not contain coconut oil!), and that is actually my one and only negative about this products. And that is only because I generally am not a fan of coconut scented products, and when I have the choice prefer other scents. Once rinsed out of the hair, and hair has dried, luckily it only leaves behind a very faint scent, which does not bother me. And given the ‘coconut scented’ ingredient, has clearly been included for its benefits to the hair, and the hair masque has evidently done miracles for my dry and frizzy hair, I can happily live with the scent, as well as I not hesitate to purchase it again.

At $41.95 for a 170g tube, the hair masque is a little pricey, however a little goes a long way, so the tube will last you a long time – and knowing how it has saved my hair, you may even be able to stretch your time between haircuts, hence long run saving you money!

All in all I highly recommend that you try the bhave The Deep Intense Conditioning Masque if you have normal to dry hair needing a little extra care, and you are looking for a chemical-free and natural product, but do not want to compromise on quality and effectiveness. You won’t regret trying it!
