Product Review: Sanctuary Spa Firming Youth Serum

I am at the age where anti-ageing products are a must, and my skin is benefitting greatly from using serums as well. Here are my thoughts on the *Sanctuary Spa Firming Youth Serum;

What They Say:
"This firming serum is a crucial stage in the Youth Boosting Facial and delivers a specialised wrinkle-reducing complex that helps strengthen and promote collagen synthesis. Over time the skin looks visibly firmer and lifted, whilst an active shown to lessen muscle contractions reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A blend of antioxidant vitamins and green tea help protect the skin, leaving it feeling hydrated, supple and looking youthful."

RRP: $29.99 (30g) – Available from Priceline

What I Say:
I have recently tried a few other products from Sanctuary Spa, including the Crème Soufflé, Essentials Salt Scrub, and Youth Boosting Facial Warming Micro-Brasion Polish, and as all have been amazing products, I was looking forward to testing the Firming Youth Serum as well.

Sanctuary Spa is from the UK, and realised that the brand has been around for over 35 years through a Spa in London’s Covent Garden, although the actual Sanctuary Spa Range wasn’t actually launched until 1998…. And I was in fact living in London in 1998 and did spend a fair bit of time in Covent Garden, so that is possibly why the brand did initially sound somewhat familiar to me.

I also love the fact that Sanctuary Spa is against animal testing and the products are free from parabens.

The Firming Youth Serum comes in a white pump bottle with silver writing, which is simply yet stylish too, although the white bottle means that you cannot see how much serum you have left in the bottle. And as always, I love that it comes with a pump, although that is simple and easy to use, dispensing just the amount of serum you need without wastage.

The serum has a slight floral scent, which is gentle and quickly fades once the serum has absorbed into the skin.

The actual serum is white in colour, and unlike other serums it has a consistency like a very light moisturiser. It absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving if feeling soft and smooth, and without leaving the skin feeling greasy. It is quite moisturising, but I still feel the need to use a moisturiser on top. But in saying that, having combination skin, I can imagine that the serum would be sufficient for my skin during the warmer summer months where my skin tends to a bit greasier.

Some serums tend to be too greasy on my skin, especially during the day, and consequently mean that my makeup won’t stay put for very long. With the Firming Youth Serum that is not the case making no difference to the longevity of my makeup.

Sanctuary Spa claims that over time the skin looks visibly firmer and lifted, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkle will be reduced.
So how did the serum fare after using it morning and night for about a month?

One of those things that always worry me when using new moisturisers and serums, is that it will make my skin breakout, but I am happy to say that has not been the case.

As for making my skin looking firmer and lifted, and my wrinkles and lines reduced, I must admit that I do not feel I have seen any major results. I however do feel that my skin is more moisturised, which in itself makes the skin look more firm and less lined as nothing makes lines and wrinkles stand out more than dry skin.

What I Like:
  • That it is lightweight and absorbs quickly into my skin
  • It doesn’t make my skin break out
  • Suitable for use both morning and night, and works perfectly under makeup
  • Nice gentle floral scent
  • Sanctuary Spa is against animal testing and the products are free from parabens

What I Don’t Like:
  • It is reasonably priced for a serum
  • While the white bottle is simple and stylish, it is impossible to see how much serum is left in the bottle

Overall, while I did not see any major results in the appearance of my lines, wrinkles and expression lines, it is a lovely serum, and my skin has thoroughly enjoyed getting a moisture boost, without my skin feeling drowned or congested. This serum perfect for those with combination or oilier skin types while those with drier skin probably won’t find it sufficiently moisturising.

Product Review: Allegra Rhodes Sweet Apple & Grapefruit Body Mist

I am not one of those who have a signature scent. I simply believe that there are too many nice fragrances to be explored to limited yourself to only one. Consequently I have a large, and constantly growing perfume collection, so I naturally happily accepted when I was asked to trial the *Allegra Rhodes Sweet Apple & Grapefruit Body Mist. Here are my thoughts;

What They Say:
"Cooling and fresh, a spritz of Allegra Rhodes fine fragrance body spray is the perfect every day treat for all over decadence. Our intoxicating body mists are subtle enough to wear at any time of day but still deliciously head turning and distinctive. No matter if you’re in the office, relaxing at the beach or sipping cocktails, your alluring fragrance is sure to accentuate your knock-out personality. A luscious fuse of candied Apple with refreshingly zesty Grapefruit makes this fragrance crisp, sweet and delightfully reviving. A mélange of Tuberose, Blonde Woods and White Amber are present to ensure the sweetness lingers."

RRP: $29.95 (175ml) – Available from Allegra Rhodes Online

What I Say:
I recently reviewed the Allegra Rhodes Ocean Mist Body Wash and the Sweet Apple & Grapefruit Hand and Nail Cream, and I absolutely love both for their beautiful fragrance, so I was so excited to also be trialling the Allegra Rhodes Sweet Apple & Grapefruit Body Mist.

Allegra Rhodes believes that "happiness and gorgeousness isn’t reserved only for the special occasions or the rich and famous. Every woman deserves to enjoy true luxury every day, at the tip of her fingers."

The Allegra Rhodes products are made using hand-picked Eau de Parfum based fragrances, making them smell absolutely heavenly. And on top of that, the products are certified parabens-free and sulphate-free. The company is Australian owned, the products made in Australia, and of course not tested on animals!  Huge bonus points all around!

The body mist comes in a stylish packaging with a gorgeous monochrome black and white pattern on the outer box. The box also has pale green sides, which represent the Sweet Apple & Grapefruit scented products, while other scents available in the range (Red Lychee, Sweet Apple & Grapefruit and Cherry Blossom) are represented by other colours.

As I mentioned in my review of the Sweet Apple & Grapefruit Hand and Nail Cream, I absolutely love this scent. It contains bittersweet grapefruit that has been mixed with candied rosy apple, making it smell fresh and summery. It has heart notes of white amber, tuberose and blonde woods, for a reviving and energetic fruity cocktail. And in spite of containing grapefruit, for me, the sweet apple is the strongest scent, and it actually reminds me of one of my favourite perfumes, DKNY Be Delicious!

The actual body mist come in a simple but stylish and stylish square plastic bottle, with a black pump. The bottle has simple black product labels, which makes look elegant and luxurious, although being a fragrance, it would have seemed even more luxurious if it had actually come in glass bottle instead.

I believe that the body mist is designed to be a day fragrance that can be layered with the other body products such as the shower gel and body lotion, and in spite of the Body Mist not being an Eau de Parfum, or even an Eau the Toilette, it is surprisingly strongly scented, due to it being Eau de Parfum based, so it has a very good staying power, so I can even smell it in the end of the day.

The Allegra Rhodes Sweet Apple & Grapefruit Body Mist will set you back $29.95 for a large 175ml bottle, which personally I find is a reasonable price for such a large bottle for such a good quality fragrance in such a large bottle. And as it is so concentrated, the huge bottle will last you a long time.

What I Like:
  • The gorgeous scent which is similar to one of my favourite perfumes
  • The price
  • The stylish and simplistic design of the packaging

What I Don’t Like:
  • It’s not that I don’t like it, but while the plastic pump bottle is functional, the body mist would have appeared more luxurious if it had come in a glass bottle (although this would no doubt mean a higher price tag too!)

Overall, this is another fantastic product from Allegra Rhodes, and I will thoroughly enjoy using this body mist as a daytime fragrance throughout spring and summer.

Product Review: New Royal Moroccan Serum Treatment

Once upon a time I could never have dreamt of putting oil into my hair, but over the last couple of years I have realised the benefits, and love how it makes my hair feel and look. Here are my thoughts on the updated *Royal Moroccan Serum Treatment;

What They Say:
"Formulated to leave your hair both stronger and feeling softer, the Royal Moroccan Serum Treatment creates long-lasting shine without leaving hair feeling heavy. It’s naturally-rich Argan Oil formulation is non-greasy and combats frizz to leave hair naturally manageable."

RRP: $29.95 (100ml) – Available from Priceline and Royal Moroccan Online

What I Say:

The Royal Moroccan products have just unveiled a new look. The Turquoise packaging has been replaced with a deep rich burgundy colour which has been inspired by the colours of Moroccan décor. And I really love this chance in colour, as the turquoise colour was simply too similar to the Moroccan Oil brand of products.

Inside the burgundy box you find a gorgeous glass bottle with the golden treatment serum. The Royal Moroccan products contain argan oil known for its nutritive, cosmetic and medicinal properties, and it claims to work to make hair soft, silky smooth and easy to comb.

I usually wash my hair every second day, and on the days I don’t wash it, after I have combed it, it does look a little frizzy and the ends a little dry, but using the oil is making my hair look and feel so much nicer, shinier and healthier. It simply controls the frizz and ‘gathers’ the ends.

I have also used the oil after washing my hair before combing it, and it makes it such a breeze to comb my long thick hair. And once dry, my hair is clearly enjoying this extra moisture treatment, as my hair feels soft, shiny and very moisturised.

After having used the Royal Moroccan Serum Treatment daily for several weeks, I do feel that my hair is feeling moisturised and is looking , and without the oil having built up in my hair or weighing it down.

The Serum Treatment has a beautiful and delicate sweet natural scent, and as I really like this scent I would like it to linger around for a bit, but unfortunately it fades rather quickly after the oil has absorbed into the hair.

As mentioned, the Serum Treatment comes in a glass bottle, which does make the oil look more luxurious than if it had come in a plastic bottle, and in fact the glass bottle makes it look more like a bottle of perfume. However, the glass bottle is also a little impractical as you don’t want to drop it on the bathroom floor, as well as it is not particularly handy for travelling.

The serum in very concentrated, so a word of advice is to only use a little at a time to avoid your tresses becoming greasy, you can always go back for seconds. And due to the bottle having a very large opening, it is very easy to dispense too much product so it would be nice if it did come with a pump, or at least a small plastic cap inserted into the opening to be able to better control the amount of oil you get.

What I Like:

  • Fantastic a making your hair easy to comb, reducing frizz and providing the hair with a moisture boost
  • Great price for a large 100ml bottle
  • Very concentrated so the bottle will last you a long time
  • Has a gorgeous scent
  • The luxurious look of the glass bottle

What I Don’t Like:
  • The glass bottle which is not very practical
  • The large opening of the bottle which makes it easy to dispense more oil than needed, and hence waste unnecessary product

All in all, it is a great Serum Treatment is a great product that makes my hair feel soft, tames flyaways and gives it a healthy shine, all while not weighing it down or making it feel greasy. At $29.95, it is great value for money, compared to other argan oil hair products available on the market, and a bottle will last you forever as it is so concentrated. If you’re looking for a new hair oil, then I highly recommend that you try this one.

Event: An Evening with Vogue and Mecca Cosmetica at the Langham, Melbourne

A few weeks ago, on October the 16th, I spent an evening with Vogue at The Langham, Melbourne, where Vogue Australia’s esteemed Beauty Editor Sigourney Cantelo presented Mecca Cosmetica’s Spring/Summer range with Head of Artistry, Tony Baumann. Together, they presented how to wear the standout looks for the season as well as their tips and tricks for the season.

This included four key trends for the Spring/Summer 2013, and how to achieve these:

1. Polished, 3D Skin. Radiant & Contoured.

2. The Statement Lip. Bold Confident Colour.

3. Contoured Eyes. Soft Elongated & Elegant.

4. Foiled Eyes. Modern Metallics.

I also learnt a few new makeup tips from Tony and Sigourney:

1. Lip liner should be applied after the lipstick to 'tidy up' the lipstick application from the bullet

2. To set makeup, loose powder should be used. Pressed powder on the other hand is only for touching up during the day

3. When applying makeup for special occasions, only use a serum , followed by primer and foundation – which means skipping your usual moisturiser as it will make your makeup stay put for longer

4. Tony also recommended using a moisturising mask the night before an event, and you will wake with glowing skin on the day of the event, as well as it will further eliminate the need to use a moisturiser before applying your makeup.

The event also saw the attendees indulging in some gorgeous canapés and delicious deserts, and of course champagne too..

And of course not to forget, the event was held at the beautiful Langham, in the beautifully decorated Alto room located on Langham's 25th floor with amazing views over Melbourne...

I am so excited to be going back there on Friday when I’ll be indulging in more of the divine deserts at the Vogue High Tea

*Images Own, PR and Vogue Australia

What do you think of these beauty tips? Are you going to try any of them this season? Have you ever been to the Langham in Melbourne?

Product Review: Violet Box – October Review

Another weekend that has slipped past too fast, and on a dull, grey and wet Melbourne morning, I got a lovely surprise this morning… A few months ago when Violet Box launched I was asked me if I wanted to trial a beauty box, I naturally happily accepted, and so far I have been more than impressed with the contents of the boxes, and have been so tempted to subscribe, but have resisted temptation – and to my surprise I got up this morning to find the October Violet box waiting for me at my front door.  Thanks so much Violet Box for your kindness, so here are my thoughts on the October edition of the *The Violet Box;

What They Say:
"Violet Box brands promises to every month include 4-6 premium beauty and lifestyle samples from well-known and trusted Australian beauty brands as well as exciting new International brands, one in particular is a revolutionary product currently trending in New York and has been featured in Vogue and on the Today Show!"

RRP: You can subscribe to Violet Box for:
1 month – $22.95
3 months - $66.00
6 months - $130
12 months - $250

What I Say:
As previous months, the October Violet Box comes in a stylish matte black box, which is closed with a magnetised flip lid and a purple ribbon, and it has the purple Violet Box logo in the corner of the box. This box is slightly smaller and narrower in size. Inside, the samples were wrapped in pretty violet tissue paper. I love the simplicity of the black box, it is so stylish that so that  it is black so I have no problems reusing these boxes to store small things such as jewellery and other little knickknacks!

So what was in the October Violet Box…

Bodyography Oxyplex Pressed Complexion Powder – Full size (RRP: $70)

I have heard about the Bodyography products but never tried them, so I am excited about this full sized mineral powder – and how cool is it that it is full size worth a whopping $70 – over three times as much as the cost of the box. Now that’s what I call great value.

I did get the powder in the colour Amber which is slightly dark for my skin tone, so I naturally would have preferred it in a tone or two lighter, but in saying that, I am sure that I will find great use for it during the summer when I get a little colour to my face!

Apivita Face Masks - Full Size (RRP: $7.90)

I love these face masks from Apivita and the fact that they are perfectly dosed in little sachets. The masks are free from parabens, silicones, propylene glycol, which is right up my alley. I got the one with carrot which is for nourishing and regenerating the skin, so absolutely perfect for my ageing skin! I can’t wait to use it!

Savoir Faire Lipgloss – Full Size ($25.00)

This is the third full sized product in this box – a full sized lipgloss in the colour Rapture Peppermint, which is a gorgeous bright red. And as the name also suggests it has a lovely peppermint scent, which I really love – It reminds me a little of toothpaste, but then, nothing beats fresh breath, does it!! I am excited about this lipgloss, I can’t wait to use it!

John Plunkett Cosmeceuticals Super Wrinkle Cream – Sample 20ml (RRP: $28.95/50ml)

This is an intensive night cream to help rejuvenate and visible reduce fine lines – so again perfect for my ageing skin. My only worry is that this is intended for dry skin, and as I have combination skin it may be a little too rich for my skin – but time will tell. But if it is, I will still find good use for it on my neck area. This is a sample sized cream, but it is a generous 20ml, so it will last you for quite some time.

Be A Bombshell Eye Shadow – Full Size (RRP: $18)

This is the fourth full sized product in this box – I am impressed!  I am very excited to try this one as I have heard so many positive things about the Be A Bombshell brand. I got the colour Money Money, which is a dark olive green – and although I am quite conservative usually wearing neutral eye makeup, this is a lovely muted green colour, so I am actually looking forward to trying it out.

Overall, I am yet again impressed with this month’s Violet Box which contains a whole four full sized products, and the last product which is a sample size, is such a generous size. Apart from the John Plunkett cream and the face masks, there are three makeup products, so one may argue that there is now a large variety of the products in the months box, but personally I don’t mind, and I absolutely love the makeup products and the brands included have been on my wish list to try for quite some time.

The products have a combined value of over $130, so that is just unbelievable value considering the box costs $22.95, you can only be ecstatic about that!

There’s only one thing left to say - well done Violet Box, you’ve outdone yourself again!!
*Product was kindly provided for consideration, and has reviewed in accordance with my Disclosure Policy.

What do you think of the products of the October Violet Box? Did you get this months’ box too? What did you think? And if not, would you consider subscribing?
And of course, as always, if you’d like to see an in-depth review of any of products in the box, leave me a comment below..

Product Review: L’Oreal Paris Men Expert Vita Lift Instant Booster – by Guest Blogger

My hubby is always jealous every time I get a new product to try. He is a true metro-male, happy to care for his skin and use skincare products to look after it. So when I was asked if Mr. Beauty & Lifestyle Hunter (Mr. BLH) would trial some skincare products, and I asked him about it – with the one requirement that HE would write up the review himself, he happily accepted. He has been a little worried that his review hasn’t quite been up scratch, he doesn’t exactly usually blog about beauty products, but rather about his love for cars (you can check out his blog here), but anyway, here are Mr. BLH’s thoughts on the *L’Oréal Paris Men Expert Vita Lift Instant Booster;

What They Say:
"L’Oréal Paris Men Expert Vita Lift Instant Booster is an anti-ageing gel that leaves the skin re-firmed and fortified. The ultra-rapid instant lifting effect tightens skin, while smoothing fine lines. With a fresh, light texture the cream penetrates deep, with no greasy effect. The five potent ingredients that provide these anti-ageing results include an Instant Lifting Hybridur™ for immediate tensing, a botanical extract to fortify the skin’s elastic network, LHA to stimulate cellular regeneration, ADS to help fortify skin’s natural resistance and HEPES to improve skin quality. Use morning and evening for younger, tighter and firmer looking skin."

RRP: $19.45 (50ml) – Available from Pharmacies, Department stores, and variety stores and Priceline

What Mr. BLH Says:
My wife has given me a new moisturiser to try, the deal was however I had to write a few words for her on my feelings towards the product. I am not a young guy but do not want to look too old, seeing we now have a four month old I would hate people to say you must be a happy grandfather, I think that would kill me. I have been a regular user of face moisturisers for some time, mainly due to dry skin after shaving with a blade.

I have also been a long time user of L’Oreal products but at times have used others. The new one I was given to try is the L’Oreal Men Expert Vita Lift Intense Booster. First impressions were I liked the bottle itself, I travel a bit for work so the shape and size fits well into my shaving bag, I also like the idea that it can easily be locked so again I won’t find my bag full of moisturiser that I cannot use. A function I really liked was the controlled amount per push of the plunger, I found it just to be the right amount to do each side of my face, one plunger each. Others I have used seem to have a very large amount that comes out with each push and if you are heavy handed on one side of your face with rubbing it in, then you need to go back for more to get full coverage.

The actual moisturiser I found to cover well and I have not had to go back for a second go to cover any dryness. I also liked that it is a gel and had a soothing coolness when applied, it helped freshen my face and certainly does not leave a greasy look to the skin. Overall I am impressed with it and would certainly buy this to use again.

So there you have it, Mr. BLH’s first beauty review. How did he go? Would you like to see more reviews for male skincare? Does your hubby use skincare products?

Product Review: Lust Have It – October Box

Yet again Lust Have It has managed to take me by surprise. I came home from being out this morning to find the October Lust Have It Box waiting for me at the front door. Lust Have It has kindly sent me the last few boxes for review, but I had no idea, and no anticipation that I would continue to receive box after box, so it really was a lovely surprise to find amongst a couple of nasty bills. Here are my thoughts of the contents of the October Lust Have It Box;

What They Say:
"Lust Have It boxes regularly contains products worth $60+ for only $19.95/month! Monthly box filled with 5 to 6 premium beauty samples. Delivered to your home or work each month for you to try."

RRP: Lust Have It Box (monthly) RRP: $19.95, Eco Box (quarterly) RRP: $29.95 – but read on to find out how to get a discount on your first box..
Available from Lust Have It

What I Say:
This month’s Lust Have It box stands out from previous boxes which have had pretty pale blue and pale and beige floral printed box, with a magnetic closure, - while this months box is a white background with bright pink, purple and orange floral/spatter watercolour design on it. Personally I really love this design, it is so much fresher and more summery and modern than the old style boxes. Another new thing is that the box opens sideways, but still with the same magnetic closure.

The October Lust Have It box is using ‘Spring Race Carnival Edition’ as its theme, which is very fitting – bring on the Melbourne Cup and consequently the public holiday in Melbourne!!

These are the goodies that I found in the October Lust Have It Box;

Le Tan Wash Off – Sample 40g (RRP: $14.99/100g)

This Wash Off offers an instant and temporary tan in just minutes. I have previously tried a similar product from Le Tan Flawless Legs, which is a great product, and while I have used this a few times, I am not a massive fan of self-tanners in general, so unfortunately this one doesn’t rock my boat!

It also comes with a discount coupon for $3 off any LE Tan Self Tan product at Woolworths.

Princess Skincare Hyaluronic Acid Mask – Sample – 1 cloth mask/28g (RRP: $25/110ml)

According to the card this is supposed to be a full sized product, but seeing a full sized product is 110ml and this mask is just 28g, I do classify it as a sample. Regardless I am looking forward to trying it. I have never heard of the brand before, but the promise of helping to reduce the appearance of fine line and wrinkles and make my skin glow, sounds pretty good to me!

Smitten Cosmetics Whipped Tinted Mousse Moisturiser SPF15 – approx. 15ml(?) - (RRP: $25/30ml)

This is another brand that I’ve never heard of before, so I am looking forward to trying it. It is supposed to be a moisturiser, SPF, Foundation, Filler and concealer all in one, which sounds pretty good, gotta love multi-tasking products. I got it in the shade Cappucino, which is a medium beige tone, and a good match for my skin.

When I opened the Lust Have It box, the screw lid was off this cream, but luckily due to its thick mousse-like consistency it hadn’t spilt out onto the other products.

Inika Mineral Eye Shadow – Full Size (RRP: $25/12g)

A few weeks ago Lust Have It revealed that there would be a full sized Inkia product in every single box, and this the one! I have heard a lot of good things about Inika so I was looking forward to this.

I got a loose mineral Eyeshadow in the colour Lust which I a dusty sea green – and while I will try this out, it is not a colour that I would usually wear so I don’t think I will get much use from this one.

Paula’s Choice Oil Blotting Papers – Sample (RRP: $10.50/100 sheets)

I have heard of Paula’s Choice, but again a brand that I’ve never tried. Years ago I used to use blotting papers, but then somehow forgot about them. Heading into the warmer and more humid months this small pack will be perfect for the handbag to help keep shine at bay.

EVO Ritual Salvation Care Shampoo and Conditioner – Samples 50ml each (RRP: $25/300ml each)

These small bottles are so cute, and specifically for colour treated hair these are perfect for my hair – well, except that I haven’t actually had my hair coloured since before I got pregnant and my son is now 4 months old… but I do have it on the cards to get it done in time for the silly season, and it will be great to try these out. I have heard good things about the EVO brand, and again, it is a brand that I’ve not tried before.

The box also comes with a voucher for $20 off your next purchase from the online shopping site, the Iconic. From what I can read in the Terms & Conditions there doesn’t appear to be a minimum spend required (unless I’ve just completely missed it!!), and if that is the case, this is a great offer, also seeing orders under $50 attract jus $7.95 in shipping, while orders over$50 have free shipping.

Finally, the box also comes with a $50 wine voucher to spend on any case of winer priced at $109.99 or more from Naked Wines.

So what’s my verdict of the October Lust Have It Box…. Overall, like the previous boxes I have received, I feel that this box contains a nice selection and variety of products – although I have to say that I found that the products in previous boxes I’ve received have been more my style, and hence the boxes better value. To sum up, I am not a bit fan of self-tanning products, I never wear green-ish eye makeup, and while I will find the blotting papers useful, I kind of don’t really rate them, if that makes sense. That leaves the Smitten foundation, EVO shampoo and conditioner and the Princess Skincare cloth mask, and while I am excited to be trying these products and will use and enjoy them, their combined value is in my eyes not worth the cost of the box..

But of course, if you love the colour of the Inika eyeshadow and are a regular user of self-tanning products, then this box would no doubt be of great value.
