PRODUCT REVIEW: BRAUN FACESPA BEAUTY EDITION FACIAL CLEANSING BRUSH AND EPILATOR 831

With troublesome skin, prone to breakouts, I rely on giving my skin a though clean daily - and needless to say, that as a girl, I am not fond of facial hairs either - so when I got the opportunity to put the new Braun FaceSpa Beauty Edition Facial Cleansing Brush and Epilator, to the test, I was naturally excited.

This Braun FaceSpa is a cool is a dual function device, which has inter-changeable facial cleansing brush and mini facial epilator head.

Let's start talking about the epilator part. I admit here that I do not really suffer with facial hair, and just not comfortable using it on my brows (they've been through enough over-plugging in their time) so apart from a small test to remove some of the fluffy fine hair on the side of my hair, I haven't thoroughly tested this one. But what I did try, it worked quickly and easily, and without any pain.

The epilator head is quite small, which helps give you maximum control and precision when removing hairs, and it is perfect for using on the chin, upper lip, forehead, on the hair line, or the eyebrows - and like when you're using an epilator on the rest of your body (I love using one on my legs), it removes hair with the root, (and not cutting them off at the skin, shavers using blades) so you'll be hair free for up to 4 weeks. And as it has 10 micro-tweezers, it has 200 plucking motions per second, so you can shave a lot quicker, plus it can capture hairs as small as 0.02mm! And what I generally like about an epilator, is that when the hairs do eventually grow out again, they do not feel as 'stubbly' as they do when you've used a shaver with a blade.

Then there's the Sonic Facial Brush, which is a facial brush that promises to give your skin a deep clean. The brush is waterproof and can be used in the shower, which I love as I can use it while I wait for my conditioner to work. The Facial Brush has soft brush head, and it promises to clean the skin 6x better than manual cleansing, thanks to hundreds of micro-oscilliations, which helps remove makeup and impurities from deep down every pore, while also refining and gently exfoliating the skin, all without irritating the skin.

I generally prefer to remove my makeup first, and use the brush as a second cleanse, using it with a gentle facial cleanser, for that extra deep clean, and to make sure that every last trace of makeup is gone. And Since using it, I have noticed that my skin is not only looking fresher and softer, it is also brighter and more glowing, as well as I am convinced I haven't had as many breakouts as I usually do.

The actual holder that is used for both the epilator head and the facial cleansing brush, has a simple design that is lightweight and easy to operate and hold. I would have preferred if it had been rechargeable, but being battery operated, along with its small size does make it ideal if you're travelling. It has two speeds (for both epilator and brush), though I find it slightly tricky to find out which one is slower and which is faster.

The epilator part comes with a cute rose-gold lid, and it would have been a welcome addition, especially for travelling purposes, if there had also been a lid for the brush attachment. In addition the kit also comes with a cute little lighted morrow and a gorgeous white cosmetic pouch that you can use for storage.

All in all a great and very nifty multi-tasking tool, at a very reasonable price.

MOTHER'S DAY GIFT IDEA: REMINGTON FACIAL CLEANSING BRUSH

Today I'd like to talk about the Facial Cleansing Brush From Remington.
I have always struggled with my skin breaking out, and even now at the age were anti-ageing products should be more realistic, my skin is still from time to time playing up like a teenagers!

However, over the years I've learnt that proper cleansing is vital in keeping breakouts at bay, and one of those tools that in particular has helped my skin, is the Clairsonic, which I admit to love, for that same reason.

Clairsonic was probably one of the first sonic facial brushes on the market, and since then, several others have joined, due to popularity, I'd say, and one of those is the Facial Cleansing Brush from Remington.

The brush has so many features, including;
  • Dual-action rotating and vibrating motion
  • LED Indicator lights
  • Three cleansing speeds
  • One minute timer that pulse every seconds
  • Fully Waterproof
  • Three interchangeable brush heads, normal, sensitive and massage
  • Up to 30 uses from one charge
  • Charging Stand
  • Beauty Bag
  • 2 Year Warranty

So how did it perform...

I naturally cannot help but compare to my old Clairsonic, which is 3 or 4 years old now, but still going strong - and I feel that this brush is every bit as efficient in giving my skin a deep cleanse deep down every single pore to remove excess sebum and impurities, and not to mention leftover makeup!

I don't have particularly sensitive skin, so have not been using the sensitive brush, but in spite of using the Normal brush, it is still very gentle. In that connection I also want to mention that I love that it pulses every 20 seconds to remind you to move onto the next zone of your face so that you do not over-cleanse.

I also love that it comes with the massage brush, which is designed to revitalise dull and tired skin, and that it is completely waterproof so that I can use it in the shower, to speed up my morning routine.

Unlike many other 'copies', I love that Remington has actually designed a new look brush that not a complete copy in the looks department, but rather a stylish (and dare I say more stylish!), brush, that sits nicely in a small female hand. The pastel mint shade of the brush is also very stunning, whilst still being girlie.

The massage brush head is also unique to Remington, and I do really like that one. While the normal and sensitive brush heads features soft bristles like any other brush head, the massage head is made with soft plastic bristles, and after use, you can really see how circulation has been boosted in the skin.

It is difficult to say if it has made any different to the state of my skin as I was already using a cleansing brush regularly. But I can definitely both see and feel that it helps give my skin a very thorough, yet gentle cleanse, leaving my skin soft and smooth.

But overall I am really enjoying using this Remington Facial Cleansing Brush - it has as many, if not more features than a standard Clairsonic, and it does an as good, if not better cleanse of the skin, also taking into account that it includes the massage head - and at less money too!

If I was to purchase a new facial cleansing brush, I would definitely consider the Remington, and highly recommend that you check it out too! And of course, it makes for a pretty good Mother's Day pressie too!!

PRODUCT REVIEW: FOREO LUNA

I have always struggled with my skin breaking out. Even to this day where I am at the age where anti-ageing products are amongst my daily go-to products. Once thing that really makes a difference to the condition of my skin, is how well it is cleansed, and when I was pregnant with my little boy I had to stop using my usual high strength AHA cleansers as these ingredients are considered to be harmful to the unborn baby – and instead start using more ‘basic’ products, and in no time, my skin started acting up. And what made it improve was when I purchased a Clearsonic brush and started using it once or twice daily. I have sworn by this brush for over two years now, and still love it – but when the opportunity to trial one of the much raved about new style cleansing systems, the Foreo Luna came up, I happily accepted, here are my thoughts;

What They Say:

The Luna incorporates an 8-speed T-Sonic cleansing system with an innovative anti-aging feature. Three different models are available to cater to specific skin types.

RRP: $249 - Available from David Jones

What I Say:

Unlike most other sonic cleansing brushes uses a brush, the Foreo Luna is an egg shaped tool that cleanses your skin by the use of tiny nubby silicone bristles and sonic pulsations that gently cleanses the skin, and it works with a combination of transdermal sonic pulsations along with silicone touch-points, which gently helps cleanse the skin while refreshing the look and feel of it.

And actually, when I think about it, I really like the lack of normal bristles, as the non-porous silicone bristles means that there is no build-up of dead skin cells or bacteria, and of course, also no having to exchange the brush head regularly.

I also really like that the Foreo is not only completely waterproof, so it is safe to use in the shower, it is also quite small, and a lot lighter than the Clairsonic, so it is easier to take with you when travelling. It also charges very quickly and according to Foreo it should last for around 300 uses in one charge – which is almost 5 months if used twice per day!

To be quite honest I doubted that the Foreo would cleanse my skin as good as my Clairsonic, and I thought that the Clairsonic with its longer and thinner bristles surely would cleanse my skin deeper down each pore, but I quickly realised that I was wrong. From the very first use Foreo made my skin incredibly soft and smooth, and with a lovely glow – now doubt from the massaging effect, which I do believe it does better than the Clairsonic. It clearly cleanses my skin from excess makeup, oil and dead skin cells. Like any other cleansing device, I have been using the Foreo with a basic facial cleanser, which works really well – but I’m sure that you will get even better results if you use it with a ‘high charged’ cleanser instead.

Actually, the Foreo has two sides, the side with the nubby silicone bristles for every day cleansing, and the ‘rippled’ side intended for anti-ageing.

You first cleanse your skin with the nubby bristles, and once done after 2 minutes, you use the rippled side to wrinkle-prone areas of the face in lower-frequency Anti-Aging Mode. In just 3 days, you’ll feel the confidence that comes from having naturally beautiful, youthful-looking skin.

The Foreo is set to run for a minute, and every 15 seconds you get a buzz notifying you to move on to the next face zone, so you spend an equal amount of time on each part of your face; left cheek, right cheek, forehead and chin and nose. The Foreo also has various speed settings as well as the anti-ageing settings, so you can adjust according to need and skin type.

So what’s the verdict after using the Foreo Luna for about a month? Well, I have to say that I am really enjoying using it. It seems to be cleansing the skin as well as the Clairsonic (or in my case probably a little better as the brush head on my Clairsonic would be in serious need of replacing!). And with my skin being so thoroughly cleansed from every last trace of makeup and excess oil and sebum, it has consequently also meant that I feel I have been getting less breakouts, and the ones that I do get, seem to clear up faster again.

As for the anti-ageing claim that the Foreo helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles, I am not too sure that I have seen any change at all in my skin. However, as well as I feel that my skin is more refined and pores seem to have minimised, I do feel that my skin has a more radiant glow and simply looks more fresh. My serums and moisturisers seem to absorb quicker, and my makeup applies no only easier, but also stays put for longer.

At $249 the Foreo is a little pricey, but I find that it is well worth the price, as used in connection with your other skincare products, it really makes a significant change to both the condition and look of my skin, in a way no skincare product can. And as it will last you for years I feel it is a worthwhile investment you wish you’d purchased earlier!

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

As you might have read by now, I am about currently in Europe, more specifically in Denmark visiting my family, along with our 15 month old boy, so that he can meet the rest of the family. Needless to say that I’m enjoying my time.

Getting here was pretty exhausting through, it is a long way to travel with such a little one, trying to keep him entertained all the time, but luckily he was very well behaved and got lots of attention from both flight attendants and fellow travellers too.

Travelling just the two of us suddenly meant that packing was a bit of a challenge, having to suddenly fit enough stuff for both of us into the one suitcase. And well, my boy needed the stuff he needs, including toys, so it meant that I sadly had to restrict the amount of stuff I took along, including shoes, makeup and skincare. It called for very smart packing. Here are some of the things that made the cut;

Benefit Radiant Skincare Set
*

To get me started, the Radiant Skincare set from Benefit is an excellent choice. It includes Refined Finish Facial Polish to exfoliate and purity the skin while minimising the pores. It also contains a Foaming Clean Facial Wash to remove makeup and keep your skin clean and clear, as well as a Moisture Prep Toning Lotion that removes any remaining makeup while revitalising and keeping the skin hydrated and ready to absorb moisturiser. Next in the box is Triple Performing Facial Emulsion SPF15, which is an oil-free gel that helps keep your skin moisturised and the Total Moisture Facial Cream that provides both immediate and long-term hydration to the skin, perfect for long-haul flights that always seem to wreak havoc with the skin. Finally, it contains It’s Potent! Eye Cream that helps fade dark circles and help smooth fine lines. The products come in the perfect travel sizes so they are perfect to bring in your hand luggage on your flight to make sure your skin stays in top condition. The products smell absolutely amazing and come in the cutest small retro-style bottles and jars, all packaged in a clear sip-cosmetic case – Simply all you need for radiant skin on your holiday!

RRP: $24 – Available from Myer

MediK8 Beta Cleanser*

My skin has always been prone to breakouts, and I know from experience that it can be difficult to keep up a good skincare routine when you’re on holidays, doing weekly face masks etc., so a good cleanser is absolutely vital in keeping my skin clean and clear. And the Medik8 betaCleanse™ is absolutely perfect to use as the second cleanse at night, to give the skin a deep cleanse, as it both cleanses deep down every pore, is antibacterial and gently exfoliating the skin at the same time. The cleanser contains beta hydroxy acid-salicylic acid with a novel niacinamide, tea tree oil and chlorhexidine gluconate blend to help improve the appearance of problematic skin, whilst helping prevent future breakouts, and all while being extremely gently on the skin and not stripping the skin of its natural oils. The liquid turns into a soft and light foam when you pump it out, and after massaging it into my skin, I like to leave it on the skin while I brush my teeth for a deeper clean before rinsing it off. It comes in a handy 40ml pump bottle so it is perfect for travelling.

RRP $13.90 (40ml) – Available from Advanced Cosmeceuticals or call 1800 242 011 to enquire

Gillette Venus Snap with Embrace*

Being away for a few weeks of course I cannot neglect shaving, and this funky travel-sided shaver from Gillette is both ever so cute and absolutely perfect. This new razor has a very compact mini-handle, while still featuring the best Gillette Venus 5-blade you’ve become accustomed to, which is surrounded by a ribbon of moisture to keep your skin soft and smooth. And while the handle is so small, you still get the perfect grip. And what’s better is that it comes in a nifty little compact container so you can just pop it into your bag (suitcase that is, as they don’t allow shaving blades in carry-on luggage!) so you can continue to have super smooth skin while on holidays. And you don’t have to buy special blades as the mini-handle is interchangeable with the standard Venus Embrace blade refills.

RRP: $15.95 – Available from Priceline, from Rouge Mag Online and from November also from select pharmacies and supermarkets

Skindinavia Makeup Primer and Finishing Sprays*

It doesn’t matter how good a foundation you use, a good primer is always vital for a flawless finish. And the new travel sized Makeup Primer Sprays from Skindinavia are absolutely brilliant for travelling. The small 20 ml bottles come in two varieties, the No More Shine Makeup Finish is an oil-controlling makeup setting spray that helps my makeup stay put in the periods when it is greasy and nothing stays put past lunchtime, as it helps controls shine and absorbs oil over the face and t-zone and thus preventing the makeup from slipping. The finishing spray is a superfine mist that helps set the foundation quickly, and it helps prevent your foundation from fading or settling into fine lines. A quick spray during the day is perfect for refreshing the makeup.

RRP: $14 (20ml) each – Available from Skindinavia

bhave Rescue Shampoo and Conditioner and Riot Control Oil*

You are probably getting fed up with me raving about these products (you can see my review on the Rescue shampoo and conditioner here and the Riot Control Oil here) from bhave, but regardless how many other fantastic hair products I use, it is like my hair is ‘at home’ with these, simply behaving better, and looking and feeling so much nicer and healthier, and it is like it is getting heathier and healthier for each day I use the products. My hair is easier to comb and knots less, so I feel I damage it less when I comb it. And the Riot Control Oil not only controls my flyaway hairs and smooths it down, but it also makes the dry ends look stronger and healthier while giving my hair an amazing lustre and shine.

RRP: Products above from a travel set, but full sized products available individualy; Shampoo and Conditioner, each $43.95 (300ml), Riot Control $48.95 (100ml) - Available from Select Salons

Lady Jayne Tangleze*

And of course you cannot neglect your hair. I have long thick hair and always carry around a hairbrush, which is usually quite bulky. But thanks to the new Tangleze from Lady Jayne that is a thing of the past. You see, the hairbrush fits into the palm of your hand, and it has a clever cover so you can protect the bristles from getting bent and damaged in an already overfilled handbag.

The Tangleze is surprisingly good on long hair, as it has dual-length bristles that quickly and easily, and very gently brushes the hair, and clears any tangles you might have, and in both wet and dry hair. All without the need to pull or drag at the hair, which is so much better for the hair, preventing damage and split ends. And the hairbrush is superlight (leaving room for another couple of lipsticks, guilty, you can never have too many lippies in your handbag, LOL), and it comes in a super cute and girlie black and hot pink colour combination.

RR: $12.95 – Available from Priceline, and select pharmacies and variety stores

Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush*

I have previously reviewed (you can see my review here) this facial cleansing brush, and while I have to be honest and admit that I have a few different I rotate, this one was my preferred choice to take away. Now, I wouldn’t normally take it with me on short breaks, but going away for a month, I simply feared my skin would start breaking out so much that I knew it had to make the trip too. So the reason I picked the VisaPure is that its design is a lot slimmer than other brushes. The brush is both rotating and rotating cleansing deep down every pore, while still being so gentle that it can be used twice a day. And as a bonus it is also waterproof so it can also be used in the shower.

RRP: $199 – Available from Myer and The Shaver Shop

Philips DiamondClean Black Edition Toothbrush*

As fittingly named, this toothbrush has been called the James Bond of toothbrushes! With its sleek matte black and chrome finish, it is simply the coolest and most stylish electric toothbrush I have ever seen. The toothbrush has a digital display that illuminates showing the five brush settings from Clean, White, Gum Care, Sensitive, and Polish. It is so high tech that it has been clinically proven to remove up to 100% of plaque from hard-to-reach places compared to a manual toothbrush, and to improve gum health in only two weeks.
It is also clinically proven to whiten teeth in one week. WOW, that is impressive.

And when on holidays I know that I tend to eat a little naughtier than I otherwise do, a few more ice creams, a little more dessert, and of course, being in Denmark I cannot go past an authentic Danish Pastry. So this toothbrush was an absolute must in my suitcase to ensure my teeth stayed clean and healthy. And what’s even better is that the toothbrush comes with a cool black travel case with funky lime-green lining, and the case also doubles as a USB charger so you can charge it directly from your laptop. Nothing short of brilliant.
RRP: $299.95 – Available from The Shaver Shop, Harvey Norman, Myer, David Jones and selected national retailers

Mary Kay Thinking of You Pendant Perfume*

I have also previously reviewed this pendant perfume from Mary Kay (see my review here), and as I mentioned at the time, it is perfect for taking with you for adding a little fragrance during the day. And also doubling as a necklace, it was the perfect travel companion too. It has a lovely fruity scent and has a pretty good staying power, plus it looks stunning too, for both day and nighttime wear.

Available from Mary Kay

Product Revew: Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush - and Giveaway

When I got pregnant last year, and had to stop using some of the skin care products I had otherwise sworn to in order to keep my skin clear, I gave in and purchased an expensive mechanical facial cleansing brush. And I loved it from the word go, as it simply instantly made such a visible difference on my skin. Since them, several other mechanical facial brushes have been introduced, and here are my thoughts on the *Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush. – And if you hurry, you’ve got a chance of winning one too, so keep reading...

What They Say:
"Philips VisaPure brings a new face care technology that will take your daily face cleansing routine to the next level with no extra effort. A gentle way of leaving your skin clean, soft and radiant."

RRP: $199 – Available from Myer and The Shaver Shop

What I Say:
As with all the mechanical facial brushes, the idea is that they clean more effectively than cleansing your face by hand. But before I go into my thoughts on the Philips VisaPure, here are the key features;

Philips claims that the new VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush:
  • 10X more effective than hand-cleansing
  • The vibrating and rotating brush is as gentle as your hands so it can be used twice a day
  • Has two speeds, a slower one for a gentle cleanse and faster one for a more deep cleanse
  • Has a 1 minute timer, which is sufficient for cleansing the full face
  • Has a skin zone timer for 3 areas ; T-zone and each of the cheeks
  • Comes with two brushes, one for normal skin and one for sensitive skin types
  • Is waterproof so it can be used in the shower
  • Improves the absorption of skin care products
  • Improves microcirculation for more radiant skin
  • Has a charging and storing stand
  • Has a slim ergonomic design
  • Takes just 6 hour to charge, which gives 30 minutes of cordless use

What you get in the pack:
  • The actual face brush
  • Charger/Stand
  • Two brush heads, one for sensitive skin and one for normal skin types
  • Quick Start Guide

I have now been using the Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush for about a month, and I am really enjoying it.

While it does say that it is so gentle that you can use it twice daily, I have to admit that I have mainly used it at night time before going to bed, and only few times in the mornings as well, when my skin has felt more greasy or congested.

I have combination skin prone to breakouts, and while I don’t have particularly sensitive skin, I did test the sensitive brush head (pink) that comes with the brush, but quickly realised that I got better results and my skin felt even softer when using the brush head for normal skin types.

After using the VisaPure my skin really feels so soft and smooth and clean like never before, yet without being red or irritated or feeling over-cleansed. And after using for about a month my skin feels and looks healthier and more glowing and radiant and is no longer as greasy. I feel I have less breakouts, and when I do feel a pimple is on its way, I feel that brush not only helps it along and make sure that it doesn’t get as big as it otherwise would, and that it clears up again so much faster.

I have heard some say that when they first start using a mechanical facial brush, the skin goes through a purging stage and will break out like crazy, before it clears up completely. But I have to say, that I have never experienced that, neither with previous brushes that I have tried, nor with the Philips Visa Pure. My skin simply looked better from day one of using it. I also clearly notice that my serums and creams absorb into the skin a lot quicker.

What I like about the facial cleansing brush is that you can use it with any cleanser you have, and even a basic cleanser will give you great results as the brush vibrates and rotates to clean deep down every single pore. And another great thing is that I actually find that you use less cleanser than you would if you were cleansing your face by hand, so while you do have the initial outlay of buying the brush, it will save you long term as your cleansers will simply go further.

The brush is fantastic at removing the stubborn long wearing makeup – but I do prefer removing my makeup first using my hands, and then following with the brush, to remove any leftover makeup, and give my pores a good clean – and doing it that way, also keeps the brushes clean for longer.

The brush is very easy to use, and once it is charged, as claimed it lasts for 30 1-minute uses – and it really does, as I am yet to recharge mine after using it for over a month every night as well as few mornings here and there. I like that the brush has a zone timer, in similar style as most electric tooth brushes, which makes it easy to know when to move on to the next area of the face, and stops you from over-cleansing certain areas.

And although the brush is completely waterproof so you can use it in the shower, using it at night, I have mainly been using it over the sink.

The actual brush is very different in design to other brushes that I have used, and is supposedly ergonomically designed. And it certainly is a lot more slimline, feminine and elegant – although it does look a little sexual (LOL) – but even so, I really like the elegant and pink design, and have not been hesitating having it out on display on the bathroom bench – and this in spite of selling our house and having countless of potential buyers through the house!  I also love that it is so slimline and lightweight, which will mean that I can bring with me when I travel, something that I have been doing with my other facial brushes as they are simply too heavy and bulky.

Even though I do love the look and design of the brush, when it is wet, it is a little slippery difficult to hang on to, and as the on-off button only requires a very gentle push, I often find that I push it by mistake.

I also love the small and discrete charger which also doubles as a stand for the brush, although unfortunately you have to remove the small clear caps that protect the bristles before putting the brush into the stand.

What I Like:
  • That my skin feels and looks so much healthier and more glowing
  • My skin is less greasy and congested, so my makeup goes on nicer and stays put for longer
  • That I get less breakouts, and those I get are smaller and disappear faster too
  • Creams and serums absorb into the skin faster and better
  • Only a small amount of cleanser is required
  • It is small and lightweight
  • It lasts for 30 uses of one minute on charge
  • The slimline and elegant design
  • It is faster to give your face a good clean than when using your hands

What I Don’t Like:
  • The brush is a little slippery in the hands when it is wet
  • It is easy to accidentally push the on-off button while in use, turning off the brush
  • It comes with small clear plastic to protect the brush heads when not in use, but then are a little difficult to put on while not bending the bristles
  • A little more expensive than other facial cleansing brushes on the market

Overall, I am really enjoying using the Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush, as I can clearly both see and feel. At $199 it is not cheap, but when you think about it, it is not much more than a facial at a salon these days, and when you also save on the amount of cleanser you go through (and not to mention use less blemish products too), it really is a great investment that you can enjoy using for years and years.
