I've been using an epilator on my legs for as long as I can remember, and I mean decades. So I was naturally excited when the latest Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa landed on my desk some months ago, I was naturally excited. You can read all about it here. As I wrote at the time, the Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa is without a doubt the most advanced epilator that I have used to date. First of all because it works both wet and dry skin, which means that you can use it in the shower or bath for extra comfort - so imagine my excitement when yet another edition was launched - the newest Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa Wet & Dry Epilation, Exfoliation & Massage System, which now comes with a massive 12 extras!!
This new Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa is essentially like the previous one, and it has epilator has pulsating active vibrations to stimulate the skin for a more gentle epilation. It also has 40 micro-grip tweezers to catch even more hair, even very short hair as short as 0.5mm, while the head of the shaver rotates to adapt to the body's contours to make the shaving even easier and more comfortable too.
It also comes with two exfoliation brushes, a blue one for deep exfoliation to help avoid those dreaded ingrown hairs, and a purple exfoliation head for more sensitive areas, and for a more refined and silky soft and smooth skin. These brushes have been developed for the whole body, except for the face. The brushing actions have more than 3000 micro-vibrations per minute to help remove both dry skin and improve the appearance of the skin.
But it also includes standard shaver head, which is designed for a fast and close shave of legs, underarms and bikini line, as well as contour trimming and cutting hair down to 55 mm length using the trimmer cap too. The shaver has two speed settings for your personal preference (if you're new to using an epilator, the lower setting may be a little less 'painful", while I've been using one for so long, that it's full steam ahead for me.
I love that his shaver so quickly and easily grabs all the tiny hairs, so I don’t have to run the shaver over the skin repeatedly to remove them, and the included extras are super nifty too. I particularly love the exfoliation brushes, which really do make my skin feel incredibly soft and smooth, and I also believe that buffing away the dead skin cells makes it quicker to shave my legs as it is easier for the shaver to grab individual hairs, as well as I feel that regular use of the exfoliation heads helps eliminate ingrown hair too, which is an extra bonus.
I also love that the Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa is quick to charge as it only takes about 1 hour for a full charge, and then it has up to 40 minutes of battery life, which is more than sufficient to shave both legs.
All these features are the same as the 'old' model, actually it is not old, it is just that this new one now comes with not just 6 attachment - but now a massive 12 different ones!!
One of the new attachments include a battery operated sonic Facial Cleansing System that has three different high-density brushes, for sensitive, normal or exfoliation. This brush is quick and easy to use, and I love that it is waterproof so you can also use it in the shower. I haven't got sensitive skin, but love that it comes with different brush head options, and the fact that it includes a sensitive option does mean that yo you can use it daily. I also really love the exfoliating brush head as it really gives my skin a deep intense clean when I need it.
Another new attachment I also love is the new Deep Massage Pad. This massage pad helps improve skin texture by massaging the skin deeper tan a standard body brush. This means improved blood circulation, which in turn means an improvement of the skin's appearance. I also always have very tense shoulders, and hence have really enjoyed using this bod massager on my shoulders and neck where the gentle vibrations have helped loosen up the tight feeling.
So overall, I really enjoy - correction, I love using this Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa, and compared to other epilators I've used over the past decades, I particularly love that this one is a wet/dry one, as I find it even quicker and easier to use in the shower, not only can I easily wash away all the small hairs, but I also find that the warm shower helps open the pores in my skin, so it is not only quicker to shave, but also less painful - and I really love that it now comes with even more useful attachment for a full spa experience at home.
Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa Wet & Dry Epilation, Exfoliation & Massage System, 9-969V - RRP: $299

INDUSTRY NEWS: CLINIQUE LAUNCHES SONIC SYSTEM PURIFYING CLEANSING BRUSH
Powered cleansing are all the rage at the moment, and I have to admit that I have also jumped on the bandwagon, loving my trusted Clairsonic, as well as having enjoyed trialling others including the the Skin Physics Derma Sonic Power Cleansing Brush, the Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush and the Olay Regenerist Advanced Cleansing System. And well, now it seems that Clinique is jumping on the bandwagon, launching their first Cleansing Brush, the Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush.
The brush has already launched in Europe and in the US, so I assume that it is only a matter of time before this brush will also launch here in Australia. And personally, being a longstanding Clinique fan, I am extremely excited, but unfortunately I am unsure of exactly when it will be available here - and as soon as I find out, I will be sure to let you all know.
What do you think? Excited? Already using a cleansing brush? Keen on checking it out when it hits the shelves in OZ?

Product Revew: Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush - and Giveaway
When I got pregnant
last year, and had to stop using some of the skin care products I had otherwise
sworn to in order to keep my skin clear, I gave in and purchased an expensive
mechanical facial cleansing brush. And I loved it from the word go, as it
simply instantly made such a visible difference on my skin. Since them, several
other mechanical facial brushes have been introduced, and here are my thoughts
on the *Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush. – And if you hurry, you’ve got
a chance of winning one too, so keep reading...
I have heard some say that when they first start using a mechanical facial brush, the skin goes through a purging stage and will break out like crazy, before it clears up completely. But I have to say, that I have never experienced that, neither with previous brushes that I have tried, nor with the Philips Visa Pure. My skin simply looked better from day one of using it. I also clearly notice that my serums and creams absorb into the skin a lot quicker.
What They Say:
"Philips VisaPure
brings a new face care technology that will take your daily face cleansing
routine to the next level with no extra effort. A gentle way of leaving your
skin clean, soft and radiant."
RRP: $199 –
Available from Myer and The Shaver Shop
What I Say:
As with all the
mechanical facial brushes, the idea is that they clean more effectively than
cleansing your face by hand. But before I go into my thoughts on the Philips
VisaPure, here are the key features;
Philips claims that
the new VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush:
- 10X more effective than hand-cleansing
- The vibrating and rotating brush is as gentle as your hands so it can be used twice a day
- Has two speeds, a slower one for a gentle cleanse and faster one for a more deep cleanse
- Has a 1 minute timer, which is sufficient for cleansing the full face
- Has a skin zone timer for 3 areas ; T-zone and each of the cheeks
- Comes with two brushes, one for normal skin and one for sensitive skin types
- Is waterproof so it can be used in the shower
- Improves the absorption of skin care products
- Improves microcirculation for more radiant skin
- Has a charging and storing stand
- Has a slim ergonomic design
- Takes just 6 hour to charge, which gives 30 minutes of cordless use
What you get in the
pack:
- The actual face brush
- Charger/Stand
- Two brush heads, one for sensitive skin and one for normal skin types
- Quick Start Guide
I have now been using
the Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush for about a month, and I am really
enjoying it.
While it does say
that it is so gentle that you can use it twice daily, I have to admit that I
have mainly used it at night time before going to bed, and only few times in
the mornings as well, when my skin has felt more greasy or congested.
I have combination
skin prone to breakouts, and while I don’t have particularly sensitive skin, I
did test the sensitive brush head (pink) that comes with the brush, but quickly
realised that I got better results and my skin felt even softer when using the
brush head for normal skin types.
After using the
VisaPure my skin really feels so soft and smooth and clean like never before,
yet without being red or irritated or feeling over-cleansed. And after using
for about a month my skin feels and looks healthier and more glowing and
radiant and is no longer as greasy. I feel I have less breakouts, and when I do
feel a pimple is on its way, I feel that brush not only helps it along and make
sure that it doesn’t get as big as it otherwise would, and that it clears up
again so much faster.
What I like about
the facial cleansing brush is that you can use it with any cleanser you have,
and even a basic cleanser will give you great results as the brush vibrates and
rotates to clean deep down every single pore. And another great thing is that I
actually find that you use less cleanser than you would if you were cleansing
your face by hand, so while you do have the initial outlay of buying the brush,
it will save you long term as your cleansers will simply go further.
The brush is
fantastic at removing the stubborn long wearing makeup – but I do prefer
removing my makeup first using my hands, and then following with the brush, to
remove any leftover makeup, and give my pores a good clean – and doing it that
way, also keeps the brushes clean for longer.
The brush is very
easy to use, and once it is charged, as claimed it lasts for 30 1-minute uses –
and it really does, as I am yet to recharge mine after using it for over a
month every night as well as few mornings here and there. I like that the brush
has a zone timer, in similar style as most electric tooth brushes, which makes
it easy to know when to move on to the next area of the face, and stops you
from over-cleansing certain areas.
And although the
brush is completely waterproof so you can use it in the shower, using it at
night, I have mainly been using it over the sink.
The actual brush is
very different in design to other brushes that I have used, and is supposedly
ergonomically designed. And it certainly is a lot more slimline, feminine and
elegant – although it does look a little sexual (LOL) – but even so, I really
like the elegant and pink design, and have not been hesitating having it out on
display on the bathroom bench – and this in spite of selling our house and
having countless of potential buyers through the house! I also love that it is so slimline and
lightweight, which will mean that I can bring with me when I travel, something
that I have been doing with my other facial brushes as they are simply too
heavy and bulky.
Even though I do love the look and design of the brush, when
it is wet, it is a little slippery difficult to hang on to, and as the on-off
button only requires a very gentle push, I often find that I push it by
mistake.
I also love the
small and discrete charger which also doubles as a stand for the brush,
although unfortunately you have to remove the small clear caps that protect the
bristles before putting the brush into the stand.
What I Like:
- That my skin feels and looks so much healthier and more glowing
- My skin is less greasy and congested, so my makeup goes on nicer and stays put for longer
- That I get less breakouts, and those I get are smaller and disappear faster too
- Creams and serums absorb into the skin faster and better
- Only a small amount
of cleanser is required
- It is small and lightweight
- It lasts for 30 uses of one minute on charge
- The slimline and elegant design
- It is faster to
give your face a good clean than when using your hands
What I Don’t Like:
- The brush is a little slippery in the hands when it is wet
- It is easy to accidentally push the on-off button while in use, turning off the brush
- It comes with small clear plastic to protect the brush heads when not in use, but then are a little difficult to put on while not bending the bristles
- A little more expensive than other facial cleansing brushes on the market
Overall, I am
really enjoying using the Philips VisaPure Facial Cleansing Brush, as I can
clearly both see and feel. At $199 it is not cheap, but when you think about
it, it is not much more than a facial at a salon these days, and when you also
save on the amount of cleanser you go through (and not to mention use less
blemish products too), it really is a great investment that you can enjoy using
for years and years.

Product Review: Skin Physics Derma Sonic Power Cleansing Brush
I have always struggled with my skin breaking out, and even
now where I should focus solely on anti-ageing products, it is sadly not the
case with my skin, and I continuously need to take extra care looking after and
cleansing my skin. And that’s where a facial cleansing brush comes in handy
cleansing deep down every pore. Here are my thoughts on the *Skin Physics Derma
Sonic Power Cleansing Brush;
I have heard and read several times that once you start using a facial cleansing brush your skin often starts to breakout for a little while, as it is purging all the built up dead skin cells etc, and then it slowly clears up again. But I have to say that when I started using the brush, it wasn’t the case with my skin, it just instantly got better.
And I love that you
can get such a deep clean of your skin without the use of harsh chemicals.
Combined with even the gentlest of cleaners, you can really feel that any
excess sebum and gunk is swept from every single pore, leaving the skin feeling
incredibly soft and smooth, and with a nice glow, and without any irritations at all. Following with a serum and
moisturiser, both absorb more quickly than usual.
Overall, this is a fantastic cleansing brush, and it is definitely comparable in quality to the much more expensive Clairsonic – yet the Derma Sonic has the more speed settings and as an added bonus it also comes with three brush heads as well as it is an Australian brand. So if you are in the market for a facial cleansing brush, I’d highly recommend that you check out the Derma Sonic from Skin Physics, it’s a fantastic contender and you won’t be disappointed.
What They Say:
"With the
ability to remove up to six times more makeup than manual cleansing, the Derma
Sonic uses sonic frequency to gently but effectively cleanse and buff the skin,
removing build up of dead skin cells and impurities."
RRP: $119.00 – Available from Myer, Priceline or Skin Physics
What I Say:
I have to be honest and admit that I have been using a
Clairsonic brush for quite some time now, so I am not new to this type of
cleansing the skin. I bought the brush when I got pregnant, and could no longer
use certain products due to their ingredient potentially harming my unborn
child – I bought the brush, and stared using basic cleansers to save my skin
from breaking out, and I have loved the results from day one.
And of course having used the Clairsonic brush previously, I
also cannot say if this 'break out period' is the case with the Derma Sonic
brush, but I guess it really comes down to the condition of the individual
skin.
The Derma
Sonic comes with:
- Holder/Charging cradle for the brush
- Derma Sonic Brush
- Brush head for normal skin types (white)
- Brush attachment for sensitive skin types (pink)
- Brush head to use on the body
- User manual
The Derma
Sonic claims to in just 60 seconds using a micro-massaging action dislodge six
times more dirt, oil and makeup from the skin than ordinary cleansing – and
this dirt, oil and makeup may otherwise get trapped in pores leaving skin
congested, dry, dull and flakey. It also claims to help reduce the appearance
of fine lines, wrinkles, pores and may improve overall skin tone and texture.
The Derma
Sonic has four speed settings for the face, and two settings for the body that allow
you to control the effect and feel on the skin, and it is waterproof and can be
used in the shower for a super quick deep cleanse.
Derma Sonic
recommends using the brush on the forehead for 20 seconds, on the nose and chin
for 20 seconds and 10 seconds on each cheek as they are more sensitive and
generally not as congested, and hence do not require as much and as in-depth
cleansing.
So how did the
Derma Sonic perform…
It is extremely
easy to use, and I love that this brush has the timer built in, as it ensures
that you do not over cleanse a certain area, and this is perfect if you are new
to cleansing brushes, as it tells you when to move on to the next area of your
face, much in the same way as some electric tooth brushes. I also love that it
has four speed settings, low, normal, high and pro as well as it has two body
settings, pulse and constant, so you can change depending on your skin type and
requirements at the time.
After having used
the brush for several weeks, once daily as I feel that twice daily is too much
for my skin - I am loving that I know every single trace of makeup is removed
and the results are evident – regular use has resulted in my skin feeling less
greasy and congested, and consequently less breakouts. And because my skin is
less greasy, my makeup also stays put looking nicer for longer. But as for a
more even skin tone and reducing the size of my pores, I have to say that I
have not noticed any difference.
What I Like:
- That it has 4 facial cleansing speed settings and two Body Cleansing settings, so there is a setting for any skin type
- That it is waterproof and can be used in the shower
- That it comes with three brushes in the initial kit, that is more than other brushes on the market
- That it is well priced compared to similar brushes on the market
- That it is readily available in Priceline and Myer
- When fully charged, and used once daily, it lasts almost two weeks before it needs to be recharged
- That it is an
Australian brand
What I Don’t Like:
- The actual brush is a little big and bulky, so lucky you only have to hold it in your hand for such a short time
- Both the facial brushes come with covers to protect the bristles, but unfortunately there is no cover for the body brush
- Apart from the red
on the brush, the brush and the holder/charging cradle look almost like an
identical copy of Clairsonic (Although with the improvement of additional speed
settings), and I much prefer when brands establish their own designs and
identity
Overall, this is a fantastic cleansing brush, and it is definitely comparable in quality to the much more expensive Clairsonic – yet the Derma Sonic has the more speed settings and as an added bonus it also comes with three brush heads as well as it is an Australian brand. So if you are in the market for a facial cleansing brush, I’d highly recommend that you check out the Derma Sonic from Skin Physics, it’s a fantastic contender and you won’t be disappointed.

Product Review: Olay Regenerist Advanced Cleansing System
When I got pregnant I knew that I had to stop
using a lot of my current skincare products as they simply contained
ingredients known to cause birth defects. Shock horror!! Obviously I couldn’t
not continue to use these products, yet having always struggled with breakouts
as long as I can remember, these products containing among others salicylic
acid where what I believed kept my skin relatively clean and free from breakouts.
And so I forked out the big money for a Clairsonic in the hope that it would
help keep my skin clear now that I had to use more ‘basic’ skincare. And from
day one of using it, I really noticed a difference in my skin, I can’t remember
it ever being that clear. Now it could be a combination of pregnancy hormones
and the Clairsonic, but I definitely believe that the more thorough in-depth
cleanse has made a significant difference. But a Clairsonic is expensive, and
not everyone can afford the high price tag, but the good news is that Olay has
now brought out a cheaper alternative – so here’s my thoughts on the *Olay
Regenerist Advanced Cleansing System;
RRP: Cleansing System: $32.99, Replacement
brush heads: RRP $9.99 (2pc per pack) – Available from Woolworths, Coles,
Priceline, Target, K-mart, BIG W, National Pharmacies and Chemist Warehouse
What I Say:
The batteries are inserted into the bottom of handle,
which you rock side to side to remove the battery cover. I assumed this would
be easy to do, but I have to say that I was struggling a little with this.
The brush head on the other hand is easy to lock into position.
I normally always remove my makeup before
using my Clairsonic, so that is also what I’ve done when using the Olay
Cleansing System, which of course also means that the brush head lasts longer,
although Olay does recommend replacing it every three months. But at $9.95 for
two brush heads, that is also doesn’t cost a lot to do, while in comparison Clairsonic
brush head cost around $30 for just one head!!
The actual Olay Skin Renewal Cleanser is a
fine cleanser with extremely fine scrubbing grains in it, in fact, using it
with the brush, you barely notice that it is an exfoliator, it is only when you
massage it into your face that you realise.
So how does it compare to the more expensive
Clairsonic. For one, the device doesn’t have a timer, but it is recommended to
use it for approx. 60 seconds. I have to admit that I do like my Clairsonic
Classic which has different timer settings, and like a tooth brush, gives me a
little buzz when it is time to move on to the next area of my face, and the
fact that it is also timed so that the area needing more attention such as the
T-Zone gets more time while more sensitive areas such as the cheeks gets less
time. However, in saying that, at a fraction of the price, it is certainly something
that I can live without.
The actual handle and the brush head are also
smaller than the Clairsonic, and keep in mind that I have the Classic version,
which is a fair bit bigger than the Clairsonic Mia version.
I do like, actually I prefer the smaller size
of the Olay handle, finding it a lot easier to hold in the hand, and move
around the face. As for the brush head, I guess that I have gotten used to the
larger Clairsonic brush head, so it will take a little getting used to the
smaller brush head. But all in all I actually prefer the smaller size, and it
is certainly also a lot easier (and lighter) take it with you when you are
travelling – when I was recently in hospital giving birth to our little boy,
(missed my pictures of our little boy, you can see them here!), the Clairsonic
took up most of the space in my toilet bag!!
But I guess the main thing really is how the Olay Cleansing System
cleanses in comparison to the Clairsonic…
Olay claims that the device which revolves at 350 times per minute, reaches skin contours where the
fingers cannot and is tested and proven to remove layers of the toughest makeup
faster and more efficiently than a standard cleansing routine - even without
the use of a makeup remover. The device cleanses four times better than basic
cleansing, resulting in better active anti-ageing ingredient penetration. The
on the other hand Clairsonic claims to cleanse
six times better than with your hands alone in just 60 seconds.
And
to be quite honest, I am not sure that you can tell the difference, although, of
course with the larger Clairsonic brush head you could argue that it cleanses a
larger part of the face, and hence used for the same amount of time, it would cleanse
the face slightly better. But on the other hand, I’ve found that I have been
using the Olay for slightly longer than the 60 seconds (which would make up for
that).
Having already used my Clairsonic for the past
year, it is difficult to say if there has been any difference to the feel and
look of my skin. On the other hand, I have now been using the Olay Cleansing
System for two weeks, and just the fact that my skin hasn’t started to feel
more oily or congested or has started to break out, only indicates one thing,
that it is doing a very good a keeping my pores clean!!
All
in all, I think that this is an amazing cleansing device which comes at a
fantastic price too (and you can even be lucky to find it on special too,
Priceline for instance just had 40% off for a few days!), so if you do not
already have a cleaning system, I would not hesitate recommending it to you,
you would not be disappointed. I wish the Olay Cleansing System had been
available a year ago when I purchased my Clairsonic, then I would at least have
had the option of saving some money!
What They Say:
"Olay Regenerist
unveils a new skincare revolution from its newly-upgraded, advanced anti-ageing
line-up. The Olay Regenerist Advanced
Cleansing System is Olay’s first-ever state-of-the-art, electronic
cleansing device designed to effectively loosen, lift and swirl dirt away to to
cleanse, exfoliate and reveal brighter, smoother skin with each use."
Olay claims that
there was one Olay Regenerist Advanced
Cleansing System sold every three minutes in the United States from August
2011 to June 2012, which is pretty impressive numbers, so I was naturally
excited to be trialing this Olay device.
The Olay Regenerist Advanced Cleansing System
comes in a box which includes the Cleansing device, a brush head, a 20ml tube of Skin Renewal Cleanser,
and two AA batteries.
The brush head on the other hand is easy to lock into position.
The handle of the device has two buttons; the larger
one top turns the device on and off and is also the slower and therefore
gentler speed, while the smaller button is the quicker speed, and hence less
gentle setting.
As recommended I dampened both the brush head
and my face, and massaged some of the Skin Renewal Cleanser over my face,
before turning on the brush and moving it around the face to activate the
cleanser.
Not having particularly sensitive skin, I used
the fast setting, although I have been trying the slow setting on my cheeks as
well, and after rinsing my face, it feels soft and glowing, and in no way is it
irritated or red. Following with my serum and day cream, they absorb into the
skin instantly.
