Product Review: Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals

With my skin having been clearer than ever during my pregnancy, I have increasingly swapped my otherwise full-coverage foundations for lighter options giving a sheerer and more natural looking finish. Here are my thoughts on the *Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals;

What They Say:
"Liquid Minerals™ makes skin look more youthful, diminishes the appearance of lines and wrinkles, minimizes pores, evens out skin tone and adheres so well there is minimal transference
The beads or spheres visible in the airless pump are actually liposomes entrapping liposomes. This state-of-the-art technology encapsulates large amounts of active ingredients, which are then time-released on to the skin."

RRP: $86 – Available from Active Skin and Adore Beauty

What I Say:

I have previously tried the Jane Iredale PureGloss, which I really loved, so naturally I was excited to also trial the Liquid Minerals, as well as I had pretty high hopes for it. Also because it retails at $86, which I have to say is the most expensive foundation I have ever tried – at that price it surely has be good!!

Jane Iredale introduced her unique skin care makeup line in May of 1994. It was the first full makeup line on the market to offer not just colour enhancement but also benefits to the skin. The products are based on micronized minerals and are made without fillers and binders, such as talc and mineral oil) and without chemical dyes or preservatives – which is just music to my ears!

At first look the Liquid Minerals look very impressive. It comes in a clear pump bottle with a gold base and a god pump. And inside the clear cylinder you can see the different coloured beads floating around in a clear gel made from aloe vera, lavender floral water and vegetable glycerin.

The beads are actually liposomes which entrapping large amounts of active ingredients, which are then time-released onto the skin. This controlled and sustained release into the epidermis increases delivery by up to 40%. The beads contain minerals, as well as other ingredients including L-Sodium hyaluronate acid, olive squalene, seaweed lipids as well as coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, vitamin K, willow bark extract, camomile, calendula and seaweeds!

This has the benefits of diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, minimizing enlarged pores while evening skin tone, and providing lightweight, comfortable coverage.

When pumping out the foundation, the beads and the gel are mixed into a mousse. And applying this mouse foundation took a little getting used to as it was like it was beading and separating on my skin – however this is described as the liposomes breaking down with the help of the heat of the skin, massaging it in, it is quickly absorbed. After a few goes I discovered that mixing the foundation well on your hand before applying, made it a lot easier and quicker too.

The mousse texture

The instructions do recommend applying the foundation with a brush, however after trying using both a brush and my fingers, I found that I preferred using my fingers.

The separating foundation.
(And yeah, clearly got too much on my hand to cover the small area!)

The foundation blended

Because of the foundation turning into a mousse when pumped out, it feels incredibly light on the skin. It gives light almost invisible coverage, so it is so natural looking, yet at the same time it still evens out the skin tone well, and hides minor flaws, redness and dark spots.

The foundation can easily be built up a little, for a slightly better medium coverage. And in spite of the light coverage, and I have to cover darker spots with a concealer, my skin simply looks fantastic. It is radiant and glowing.

And although I have combination skin, and foundations usually start to slide off by lunchtime, the Liquid Minerals stays put all day, without settling into fine lines, changing colour or getting too shiny.

The foundation has a light scent of aloe vera, which is pleasant and which quickly fades once absorbed into the skin.

I tried the Liquid Minerals in shade Light Beige, which was a perfect match for my medium beige skin tone. The foundation comes in 12 colours, which should be sufficient for everyone to find their match.

After using the foundation for a couple of days, I started noticing that when I removed my makeup at night, my skin felt incredibly moisturised, soft and smooth, almost as if I had just removed a moisturising treatment mask.

All in all, this is an amazing foundation. I’ve never tried anything like it. It is not only very comfortable to wear, make my skin look great, it is also caring for my skin at the same time. It really is both makeup and skincare in one, and therefore I find that it is absolutely worth its price tag!
