MAKEUP TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

When I go on holidays, one of the things I always tend to over-pack is my makeup. I mean, it is a necessity to bring a least 6-8 different lipglosses, eye shadows, blushes……isn’t it?? But after countless trips where I’ve only used a few of the items, when I went to Europe last month, even though I was away for a month, I decided to seriously restrict myself and narrow down the items to bring. These are some of the things that made it into my bag;

Jane Iredale Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder and Refill-Me Refillable Loose Powder Brush*


 

Loose powder and powder foundation is the biggest no-no when you travel. I speak from experience, as believe me it can make such a huge mess in your luggage. But thanks to the new Refill-Me Refillable Loose Powder Brush, you can now bring your favourite powder foundation with you on the go. The brush has a self-contained locking mechanism that prevents spilling and it is so easy to fill thanks to the scoop provided. And the smart cap a protective sleeve helps ensure that the bristles of the bush stay in place too.

Mineralogie Blush Bronzer in Harmony-Wallflower*

This blush bronzer duo from Mineralogie is the absolute perfect travel companion. It comes in a stylish round slim black compact with a large mirror and a powder puff, and while I do prefer to apply with a brush, the puff does come in handy when you are out and about. The Blush Bronzer has two shades, a dusty rose and a darker warm rose shade, so you can use them on their own or you can combine for your preferred look. The lighter shade is perfect as a blush, while the darker shade works perfectly for both contouring and as a bronzer. And as always with Mineralogie, it is made from the finest of mineral powder, that applies with a good colour payoff, yet without caking or settling into fine lines, and it stays put all. I cannot praise this Blush Bronzer enough, I’m simply so in love with it.

Jane Iredale Rose Dawn Bronzer*

 

Alternatively I use a long time favourite Rose Dawn Bronzer from Jane Iredale (check out my full review here), which is a quad of golden bronze and copper-toned shades, and it is also a true multi-tasker. The long wearing powder is suitable to use on both the eyes, cheeks, and as a bronzer all over the face and décolleté for a nice glow, or using the lighter shades, it can be used as a highlighter. And it can even be used on the lips with a touch of clear lipgloss on top! It has a subtle shimmer that comes from 24-karat food-grade gold flakes, which gives a natural and subtle glow.

Jane Iredale Celebrate Eye Shadow Trio Palette*

This eye shadow palette contains three shades, a golden caramel shade, a dark chocolate and a pearl highlighting shade, and is absolutely everything you need to achieve a neutral smoky eye, and you can use the shadows on their own for a simple natural look, or combined for a more dramatic look perfect for nighttime. The colours are so well put together too, and just the shades that I normally will reach for. The shadows are extremely pigmented and are so easy to apply and blend, and they stay put all day without fading or creasing, and with no fallout. And I absolute adore the stunning slim line cold compact with the large mirror inside. I will cry the day I hit the pan on each of these colours.

Covergirl Bombshell Intensity Eyeliner*

This liquid eyeliner is tiny, the smallest one I have ever seen, so it is perfect to pack when you are going on holiday, and of course perfect to pop into the handbag for touch-ups. Not that you need to carry it around as the liner gives you a colour saturated line that stays put all day, without smudging or fading. And thanks to the felt tip, it is easy to draw both a thin line or a bold one depending on occasion and preference.

Lancome Grandiose Mascara*

This mascara is so unique thanks to its revolutionary swan neck brush that makes it easy to reach and coat even the smallest of lashes – well it does take a little while to master, but once you have, it gives the lashes lots of volume and an amazing lifted and fanned look with a natural curl, all without the need of an eyelash colour – and the finish is jet black and glossy up, lasting all day without irritating the eyes. It is not cheap, but when you like me are hopeless with false lashes and have little time to yourself thanks to a little toddler, this mascara means that false lashes and lash curlers are no longer necessary, so completely worth every cent! Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipstick in Berry a la Mode*

This lipstick in Berry a la Mode from Mary Kay comes in the most luxurious looking silver packaging, and it not only gives your lips the most stunning full intensity warm red shade that is perfect for day and nighttime wear, although particularly suited for nighttime. It is very long wearing, but unlike most other long-wearing lipsticks, it is feels amazing on the lips. And thanks to the advanced formula, that contains anti-ageing ingredients that cares for your lips to helps them look younger, fuller, plumper and firmer. And with a whopping 14 shades in the range, there is sure to be a match for everyone!

Lanolips Lip Ointment with Colour SPF 15 Rhubarb

This lip ointment from Lanolips is nothing short of amazing. With its contents of over 60% Ultra Pure Medical Grade Lanolin and vitamin E, it is perfect for those long haul flights as it keeps your lips soft and hydrated, all without being sticky. And the colour Rhubarb is a lovely warm red shade that gives just enough colour on the lips so you know it is there, yet without you feeling too made up, and the glossy finish is lovely for both daytime and nighttime wear too. As an added bonus it comes with SPF15 so you know your puckers is protected from the harsh sun.

Real Techniques On Location Travel Essentials*


 

The set contains an Essential Foundation Brush, A Multi Task Brush and a Domed Shadow Brush all presented in a case that closes with velcro, keeping your brushes organised and safe on the go, while it can convert into a stand for each reach.

All the brushes are made from plush taklon bristles and they are extremely soft. The Foundation brush has the perfect size to apply liquid foundation and it gives a nice even look, but I have also used it for concealer which it is also perfect for thanks to the slightly pointed tip that fits perfectly under the eye. It comes with a golden shaded shaft.

The Multi Task Brush comes with a bright pink shaft and is intended for use with both powder, blush and bronzer. It is a very dense brush and it picks up powder very easily, and distributes nicest and evenly. But I have to admit that while I love using it with both powder and bronzer, I personally find it a little too big to use with a blush, and I would prefer to use a slightly smaller one, but while I was on holidays, it did cover all my needs!

Finally, the Domed Shadow Brush comes with a purple shaft and it is designed for shading and defining the eyes, but I do find that it is a little too big and fluffy for defining, but it is perfect for shading and blending out eye shadow.

The brushes are all of amazing quality, so a fantastic buy, I definitely want to add more Real Techniques brushes to my collection!

BEST OF BLUSHES

With a teething baby, I cannot remember the last time I got a full night’s sleep without any interruptions, so as a consequence I feel I am often looking tired and washed out – and one of those makeup products sure to make me look a little ‘fresher’ in an instant is a blush. In other words, I simply couldn’t live without one, and hence has a selection of different ones depending on my mood and occasion..

 

 

ELES Mineral Blush in Mixed Berries

 

I have previously reviewed the ELES Mineral Blush in Coral Sun, and it remains one of my all time favourite blushes. But one in Mixed Berries, which is, as the name suggests a darker shade, is so on-trend, and perfect for winter look. Normally I would not go for a blush that looks so dark in the pan, but the colour has surprised me. While it is extremely pigmented so you have to apply it with a very light hand, you can of course also get just a touch of colour, but just adding the tiniest amount of blush to your brush. It is long wearing, and doesn’t slide or fade during the day. I love that it contains absolutely no chemical nasties, but rather it cares for your skin, containing vitamins A, E and C to condition and protect the skin.

Clinique Blushing Blush in Precious Posy

 

With combination skin, prone to shine by the afternoon, I don’t like too shimmery products as I feel it makes my skin look even greasier – but this blush has just the right amount of sheen to still give you a nice glowing look. It has a lovely peachy-pink shade that brightens up your face and makes you look fresh and like you’ve just had 8 hours of un-disturbed beauty sleep (I wish). And it simply stays put until you take it off again, and I love that it is oil-free so it won’t make my skin break out. It is very pigmented, so you can add just a touch of colour or build it up to a more intense look – which is so easy to do with the soft angled sculpting blush brush that comes with the blusher.

Nvey Eco Powder Blush in 957

This blush from Nvey Eco is another one of my go to blushes, and the palest one in my line-up today (check out my initial review here). I simply love the product is certified organic and the products are paraben free and made without talc, synthetic fragrances or chemical nasties. The pale dusty rose and is perfect for pale skin and during winter, and it has a tiny touch of shimmer to give you a nice sheen – it is just perfect for those days when you want a subtle natural look. And being dusty rose colour, it is perfect to use as an Eyeshadow too.

Clinique Blushwear Cream Stick in Peachy Blush

 

If you are more for a cream blush, you cannot go past the Clinique Blushwear Cream Stick in Peachy Blush. This stick goes on like a cream but transforms into a powder as you blend it onto your skin. The wind-up stick is easy to use and I like to dab on a little onto my cheeks with the stick, and then blend it out with my fingers. And the result is so lovely, giving my cheeks a nice natural flushed look, so perfect for those casual days when you don’t want to look too made up. And while the stick is easy to pop into your handbag without fearing it will spill, there is no need, as it simply stays put all day!

Jane Iredale In Touch Cream Blush in Charisma

 

Don’t be fooled by what looks to be a very dark colour, as Charisma is a burgundy shade that looks very dark in the stick, yet it blends to a lovely sheer and natural look. This tiny blush stick has a lovely cocoa scent and is full of high quality and very concentrated creamy blush, so you only need a small sweep for a dewy radiant glow. It goes on like a dream and is so easy to blend with your fingers – and as it is so small, it is perfect for the handbag too if you’re on the go, - and then it’s perfect to use on your lips too – and regardless if you use on your cheeks or your lips, it is very long lasting.

Mineralogie Blush in Pink Sand

 

If you are more for loose mineral pigments, you cannot go past the Mineralogie Blush in Pink Sand. The slightly shimmering blush in Pink Sand is a beautiful dusty pink shade that will brighten your complexion and give you a nice healthy glow, while looking very natural. It is so easy to use and blends like a dream with a soft blush brush. I love that it has been formulated with vitamins E and A to help sooth and protect the skin, and it doesn’t contain talc, starch, perfume or dyes so it is very gentle on the skin. And as a bonus it can also be used as any Eyeshadow.

Vani-T Powder Blush in Tibetan Ochre

 

I have previously reviewed this mineral blush from Vani-T (which you can see here), but thought it was worth a second mention too as it is still one of my favourites. The warm rose colour is shimmery, but again, has just the right amount of shimmer to give you a radiant and healthy glow without being over the top. It is easy to blend, and just as easy to build up in colour if desired. And I love that it is free from all the chemical nasties. And how gorgeous is the square jar that looks like it has a massive diamond on top!

Estee Lauder Pure Color Cheek Rush in Techno Jam

 

Finally, if you prefer a tint, you’ll love this light water-based gel from Estee Lauder. I have also previously reviewed this one (see my review here), but again one that continues to be a favourite of mine. It is so light, and so extremely pigmented that you just need a few drops on the apples of your cheeks for that perfect ‘pinched cheeks’ and flushed look that stays put throughout the day.

But I have to warn you, because it is so pigmented you have to work fast to blend it, or it will come up very dark (and stain your fingers too), but it is all worth it. I also love using it as a lip stain, for natural ‘just bitten’ lips!

So there you have it – a selection of blushes, and something for everyone from light to dark shades in and textures, from standard powder, to loose pigments, cream and tint. So which one is my favourite one, you might ask? And I honestly couldn’t pick one over another, as I love them all, and that you with this line-up can achieve just the look you’re after, be it a barely there flushed cheek to a more intense look for a night out.

PRODUCT REVIEW: MINERALOGIE EYE SHADOW QUAD IN A-LIST AND EYE SHADOW IN SEPIA

Today I’d like to share with you my thought on some newly launched autumn 2014 collection products from Mineralogie, the *Mineralogie, the Pressed Eyeshadow Quad in A-List and Eye Shadow in Sepia;

 

 

What They Say:

The A-List Pressed Eye Shadow Quad contains the perfect combination of Autumn’s must-have shades that provide light yet luscious colour effortlessly. The shades of Rose Mist, Sugar Lily, Mulberry and Black Velvet can create a soft romantic look or an intense smoky eye – the choice is yours.

The Sepia Pressed Eye Shadow is a delicately rich chocolate shade that is perfect for autumn to create an updated deep smoky eye.

What I Say:

I have previously tried some makeup from Mineralogie, including the amazing bronzer (if you’ve missed it, you can see my review here).  

Mineralogie is that it is an Australian brand, which was established in 2007, and now available in over 12 countries around the world. And I like that the brand  manufacturers and distributors of 100% mineral makeup made from pure pharmaceutical-grade ingredients that are free from talc, starches, dyes, perfumes and parabens. And of course the products have not been tested on animals.

As an added bonus the eye shadows have been pressed with sweet almond oil for a crease resistant long lasting finish, and they have added vitamins E and A and aloe vera and rosemary to help soothe the eye area. And of course, the eye shadows are hypo-allergenic and wont irritate the eye area, and as I have very sensitive eyes, this is a big positive for me.

And Mineralogie has a huge product range with over 25 different product categories and around 250 colour combinations. How impressive is that!

Eye Shadow Quad in A-List contains a pale pink (Rose Mist), a pale bronze (Sugar Lily), a taupe (Mulberry) and a black (Black Velvet). The first three colours have a subtle shimmery sheen, while the black is a velvety matte shade.

 

The Eye Shadow in Sepia is a matte dark chocolate shade.

 

The palest colour, the Rose Mist, is perfect for applying all over the eyelid, followed by either Sugar Lily or Mulberry on the crease of the eyelid. I then use the Sepia shade on the outer corners blending into a V-shape to create a smoky eye effect. If I am going out for a night out, and want a darker and more dramatic look, I use the Black Velvet colour on the outer corners instead. Finally, to use the Rose Mist shade again under the brow bone and in the inner corners of my eyes as a highlighter to brighten up.

 

The four colours in the palette work perfectly together, but as just as suitable to use on their own for a more minimalistic look, and so is the Sepia shade. However, using the Sepia shade in addition for a smoky eye (instead of the Black Velvet) makes it more usable as an everyday look, and consequently I would have preferred if the Sepia had been a part of the palette instead of the Black Velvet.

 

 

 

Another way of using the palette is of course only using the three lighter shades and leave out the Black Velvet, for a more subtle daytime look, as suggested by Mineralogie.

 

 

The eye shadows are easy to work with, and blends easily. They are very pigmented so it is easy to build up an intense colour, while you can still achieve a just a wash of colour for a more subtle look.

Even with my combination skin and therefore greasy eyelids, the eye shadows are very longwearing as promised, and with the use of a primer first, they do stay put all day without sliding, or settling into creases or fine lines.

 

The palette comes in a slimline simple and elegant black compact with a see-through hole in the middle, allowing you to see the colours inside, which consequently means that the mirror inside is a little small. While I think it is a great idea being able to see the colour and distinguish between several palettes, on the other hand, I would personally have preferred a larger mirror. On the other hand, I rarely apply eye shadow on the go anyway, so it is not that vital for me. But one thing that does bother me a little is that the compact is a little difficult to open. I am not sure if it is because it is new, and it will loosen up with use, or there is a special trick to opening it, but right now I am struggling with it, and only manage to open it by sticking a nail into the opening.

The eye shadow palette comes with a small double ended black applicator, with a sponge in the one end and a brush in the other, and both are in a great quality. The applicator is obviously rather small to be able to fit inside the compact, so it can be a little difficult to work with it, if you are used to long-shafted brushes, but they are great if you are on the go. But personally still prefer to use my own brushes, but still, considering the price of the palette it is great to see the applicator included. The single eye shadow in Sepia, however, doesn’t have an applicator included.
 

The eye shadow single comes in a little square stylish compact with a black lid and a clear base, and unfortunately, like the palette, I do struggle to open it, and need the assistance of a nail! Compared to the quad, unfortunately, the compact for eye shadow single is a little more bulky, being about 30% higher. Inside the lid of the compact there is a little round mirror, which is reasonably sized considering the small eye shadow, but there is no applicator with it, which again, doesn’t really bother me.

 

In terms of cost, I feel that the $65 for the quad and $29 is very reasonable priced for eye shadows of such a high quality, also because all the colours in the quad work so well together, that you will actually make use of them all. Obviously, the single shadow is relatively more expensive, and for only a little more than the cost of two of the singles, you can actually get the palette, so personally I know what I’d go for.

What I like:

• Long wearing and gentle on the eyes
• Highly pigmented shadows that are long wearing
• Colours work well together, or can be used on their own for a minimalistic look
• Simplistic and stylish looking packaging
• Reasonably priced for both the quad and the single eye shadow

What I Don’t Like:

• A little difficult to open the products, especially the palette
• The mirror in the palette is very small

Overall, this is another amazing product from Mineralogie – and being a very conservative girl, mostly using neutral and brown shades, that these eye shadows are fast becoming amongst my most reached for makeup products as I can use them or a simple and quick everyday look, or a more intense look if I’m going out.


These products truly belong on the A-List, and makes me so keen to explore more of all those 250 colour combinations available in the Mineralogie product range.

Product Review: Mineralogie Pressed Mineral Bronzer

Summer is upon us, and I am paler than ever. Last summer I was pregnant, and couldn’t stand the heat or the sun, and this summer has so far been one of the worst ones Melbourne has experienced. Still, when the sun is finally peaking out, I am keeping out of the sun as much as possible. My skin is already sufficiently damaged and I consequently have more pigmentation than I like. But for a bit of glow to my face, you cannot go past a good bronzing powder, so here are my thoughts on the *Mineralogie Pressed Mineral Bronzer;

What I Say:

This is the first product that I’ve tried from the brand Mineralogie so I consequently did a little research. The brand manufacturers and distributors of 100% mineral makeup. In addition Mineralogie is a ‘green’ company, as all outer box product packaging is printed using soy ink on recycled papers from sustainable tree farms. Many of the company’s containers are made with 20% recycled materials while others are 100% biodegradable (Eco-Chic compacts), as well as a large number of the containers are refillable and reusable making them both user and environmentally friendly. Recycled packing boxes and milo grain resin biodegradable peanuts are used and reused in shipments, whenever possible. The company also donates a portion of its proceeds to the Natural Resources Defence Council. And of course, none of the products are tested on animals. Big ticks of approval from me!

 

 

 

The Mineralogie Pressed Mineral Bronzer contains among others Vitamins E and A as well as Aloe Vera & Rosemary help to soothe and protect the skin, and Zinc Oxide which is supposed to make it long lasting as well as it has been pressed with moisturising sweet almond oil.

 

The bronzer has next to no scent comes in a sleek round compact with Mineralogie written in white. Simple and modern, just what I like – I’ve always loved the simplicity of the monochrome black and white! The compact has a mirror in the lid and also contains a small powder puff, and although I rarely touch up my makeup on the go, the mirror is still a nice feature, and so is the inclusion of the powder puff, though I prefer applying the bronzer with a brush.

 

 

The bronzer is available in two shades Sunswept and Barcelona, and I tried the lighter colour, Barcelona, which is a nice match to my medium neutral skin tone. 

The bronzer is very finely milled, so you can apply just a fine sweep over the bridge of your nose, forehead and cheeks for just a touch of colour and a natural looking healthy glow, or you can build up the colour for a more intense tanned look.

The bronzer has a little bit of golden shimmer particles throughout, but this is still very subtle, which I like as shimmery products often make my combination skin look even more greasy and shiny! And unlike other bronzers, it doesn’t turn orange on your skin, but rather gives you a very natural healthy look.

 

The bronzer is so easy to apply and blend, and it is perfect to use both on its own, or on top of a foundation, of if you like, you can even use it as a blusher, for contouring or on your décolleté, and regardless it provides a nice even silky soft finish, that stays put all day, without settling into the fine lines on my face.

On the negative, this is a little pricey, but as it is such a high quality product, in fact, I find it is at the same if not better quality than the better known brands in the department stores, which charges even higher prices, so it really is worth its price.

What I Like:

• It is long lasting
• Comes in a sleek compact with a mirror and a powder puff
• Finely milled and very concentrated
• Provides a nice even finish and a natural healthy looking glow
• You can build up the colour whilst still getting a natural look
• It doesn’t turn orange on your skin
• It contains ingredients that care for the skin
• Mineralogie has a 'green' philosophy

What I Don’t Like:

• It is a little pricey

Overall, this is a lovely bronzer, and the fact that it gives me such a natural suntanned look will mean that I am even more likely to stay sun-safe and avoid baking in the sun for a tan this summer, and I now could only wish that I had come across this amazing brand earlier!

Product Review: Mineralogie Waterproof Mascara

If there is one thing I always wear, it’s mascara. Even if I don’t wear any other makeup, I usually wear mascara. I haven’t got particularly pale lashes, but I simply just feel that I look ‘naked’ and sick without it. But as we all know, mascara isn’t just mascara. So when I was asked to trial the *Mineralogie Waterproof Mascara by Tammerly from Spoilt by Pink Diva, I naturally happily accepted. Here are my thoughts;

What I Say:

I love it when I come across new brands. And as I has not previously heard of the Mineralogie brand, so I decided to do a little research and I was very happy with what I discovered. The products not only contain the most pure minerals, they are also free of any harsh chemicals. Increasingly interested in more natural skincare and makeup products, I really love sound of that. I also love that Mineralogie has listed all the ingredients used in the mascara on the packaging, which you rarely find on mascaras these days.

The mascara comes in a very simple black packaging with white writing, making it look very luxe and stylish.

Miineralogie claims that the Waterproof Mascara defines and separates each lash while giving a long, lush and rich finish that will last all day, yet will be easy to remove. And having very sensitive eyes, that easily water, I do prefer using waterproof mascaras to make sure that I don’t end up with mascara running down my face during the day.

I tried colour black, which is a glossy black, and one coat of the mascara did coat and separate my lashes nicely, giving them a nice glossy look. But as I didn’t feel any volume or length had been added, I added another coat. But sadly, when I added the second coat, my lashes started to stick and clump together for a not very natural look. I used the mascara several times, but unfortunately each time with the same result.

The mascara stays put all day, without dropping, smearing or smudging, and it feels very gentle and wear, even for my sensitive eyes.

The mascara wand is a standard medium spoolie brush, that easily gets into the hard to reach lashes. But unfortunately the bristles on the brush are very hard and stiff, so I found that they were ‘scratching’ my lash line as I was applying the mascara, something my sensitive eyes did not enjoy.

 

Sometimes waterproof mascara can be difficult to remove, even with makeup remover specifically designed for waterproof makeup. I tried to remove the Mineralogie Waterproof Mascara with a couple of different makeup removers for waterproof, and regardless of which one I used, it was easy to remove without the need to rub and tear at the eye area.

Mineralogie Waterproof Mascara has a slight chemical scent, which I cannot say that I am fond off, but it does quickly fade away, I can still tolerate it.

The Mineralogie Waterproof Mascara is available for purchase through select stockist, as well as online through the Mineralogie online store, which charges $5.95 for the delivery.

At $34, it is not a cheap mascara, but considering it is a mineral mascara I think it is still a reasonable mascara. However, although it was comfortable to wear, it is not the mascara for me, as it simply does not give my lashes the desired look and I am not fond of the stiff brush.
