PRODUCT REVIEW: BRAUN FACESPA BEAUTY EDITION FACIAL CLEANSING BRUSH AND EPILATOR 831

With troublesome skin, prone to breakouts, I rely on giving my skin a though clean daily - and needless to say, that as a girl, I am not fond of facial hairs either - so when I got the opportunity to put the new Braun FaceSpa Beauty Edition Facial Cleansing Brush and Epilator, to the test, I was naturally excited.

This Braun FaceSpa is a cool is a dual function device, which has inter-changeable facial cleansing brush and mini facial epilator head.

Let's start talking about the epilator part. I admit here that I do not really suffer with facial hair, and just not comfortable using it on my brows (they've been through enough over-plugging in their time) so apart from a small test to remove some of the fluffy fine hair on the side of my hair, I haven't thoroughly tested this one. But what I did try, it worked quickly and easily, and without any pain.

The epilator head is quite small, which helps give you maximum control and precision when removing hairs, and it is perfect for using on the chin, upper lip, forehead, on the hair line, or the eyebrows - and like when you're using an epilator on the rest of your body (I love using one on my legs), it removes hair with the root, (and not cutting them off at the skin, shavers using blades) so you'll be hair free for up to 4 weeks. And as it has 10 micro-tweezers, it has 200 plucking motions per second, so you can shave a lot quicker, plus it can capture hairs as small as 0.02mm! And what I generally like about an epilator, is that when the hairs do eventually grow out again, they do not feel as 'stubbly' as they do when you've used a shaver with a blade.

Then there's the Sonic Facial Brush, which is a facial brush that promises to give your skin a deep clean. The brush is waterproof and can be used in the shower, which I love as I can use it while I wait for my conditioner to work. The Facial Brush has soft brush head, and it promises to clean the skin 6x better than manual cleansing, thanks to hundreds of micro-oscilliations, which helps remove makeup and impurities from deep down every pore, while also refining and gently exfoliating the skin, all without irritating the skin.

I generally prefer to remove my makeup first, and use the brush as a second cleanse, using it with a gentle facial cleanser, for that extra deep clean, and to make sure that every last trace of makeup is gone. And Since using it, I have noticed that my skin is not only looking fresher and softer, it is also brighter and more glowing, as well as I am convinced I haven't had as many breakouts as I usually do.

The actual holder that is used for both the epilator head and the facial cleansing brush, has a simple design that is lightweight and easy to operate and hold. I would have preferred if it had been rechargeable, but being battery operated, along with its small size does make it ideal if you're travelling. It has two speeds (for both epilator and brush), though I find it slightly tricky to find out which one is slower and which is faster.

The epilator part comes with a cute rose-gold lid, and it would have been a welcome addition, especially for travelling purposes, if there had also been a lid for the brush attachment. In addition the kit also comes with a cute little lighted morrow and a gorgeous white cosmetic pouch that you can use for storage.

All in all a great and very nifty multi-tasking tool, at a very reasonable price.

PRODUCT REVIEW: BRAUN SILK-EPIL 9 SKINSPA 4-IN-1 FOR LEGS, BODY AND FACE

I've been using an epilator on my legs for as long as I can remember, and I mean decades. So I was naturally excited when the latest Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa landed on my desk some months ago, I was naturally excited. You can read all about it here. As I wrote at the time, the Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa is without a doubt the most advanced epilator that I have used to date. First of all because it works both wet and dry skin, which means that you can use it in the shower or bath for extra comfort - so imagine my excitement when yet another edition was launched - the newest Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa Wet & Dry Epilation, Exfoliation & Massage System, which now comes with a massive 12 extras!!

This new Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa is essentially like the previous one, and it has epilator has pulsating active vibrations to stimulate the skin for a more gentle epilation. It also has 40 micro-grip tweezers to catch even more hair, even very short hair as short as 0.5mm, while the head of the shaver rotates to adapt to the body's contours to make the shaving even easier and more comfortable too.

It also comes with two exfoliation brushes, a blue one for deep exfoliation to help avoid those dreaded ingrown hairs, and a purple exfoliation head for more sensitive areas, and for a more refined and silky soft and smooth skin. These brushes have been developed for the whole body, except for the face. The brushing actions have more than 3000 micro-vibrations per minute to help remove both dry skin and improve the appearance of the skin.

But it also includes standard shaver head, which is designed for a fast and close shave of legs, underarms and bikini line, as well as contour trimming and cutting hair down to 55 mm length using the trimmer cap too. The shaver has two speed settings for your personal preference (if you're new to using an epilator, the lower setting may be a little less 'painful", while I've been using one for so long, that it's full steam ahead for me.

I love that his shaver so quickly and easily grabs all the tiny hairs, so I don’t have to run the shaver over the skin repeatedly to remove them, and the included extras are super nifty too. I particularly love the exfoliation brushes, which really do make my skin feel incredibly soft and smooth, and I also believe that buffing away the dead skin cells makes it quicker to shave my legs as it is easier for the shaver to grab individual hairs, as well as I feel that regular use of the exfoliation heads helps eliminate ingrown hair too, which is an extra bonus.

I also love that the Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa is quick to charge as it only takes about 1 hour for a full charge, and then it has up to 40 minutes of battery life, which is more than sufficient to shave both legs.

All these features are the same as the 'old' model, actually it is not old, it is just that this new one now comes with not just 6 attachment - but now a massive 12 different ones!!

One of the new attachments include a battery operated sonic Facial Cleansing System that has three different high-density brushes, for sensitive, normal or exfoliation. This brush is quick and easy to use, and I love that it is waterproof so you can also use it in the shower. I haven't got sensitive skin, but love that it comes with different brush head options, and the fact that it includes a sensitive option does mean that yo you can use it daily. I also really love the exfoliating brush head as it really gives my skin a deep intense clean when I need it.

Another new attachment I also love is the new Deep Massage Pad. This massage pad helps improve skin texture by massaging the skin deeper tan a standard body brush. This means improved blood circulation, which in turn means an improvement of the skin's appearance. I also always have very tense shoulders, and hence have really enjoyed using this bod massager on my shoulders and neck where the gentle vibrations have helped loosen up the tight feeling.

So overall, I really enjoy - correction, I love using this Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa, and compared to other epilators I've used over the past decades, I particularly love that this one is a wet/dry one, as I find it even quicker and easier to use in the shower, not only can I easily wash away all the small hairs, but I also find that the warm shower helps open the pores in my skin, so it is not only quicker to shave, but also less painful - and I really love that it now comes with even more useful attachment for a full spa experience at home.

PRODUCT REVIEW: BRAUN SILK-EPIL 9 SKINSPA

I've been using an epilator on my legs for as long as I can remember, and I mean decades. So I was naturally excited when the new Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa landed on my desk.

This Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa is without a doubt the most advanced epilator that I have used to date. First of all because it works both wet and dry skin, which means that you can use it in the shower or bath for extra comfort.

The epilator has pulsating active vibrations to stimulate the skin for a more gentle epilation. But it also includes standard shaver head, which is designed for a fast and close shave of legs, underarms and bikini line, as well as contour trimming and cutting hair down to 55 mm length using the trimmer cap too.

In addition It also comes with a high frequency cap and a sensitive skin contact cap included, making it a total of 6 extras.

The shaver has two speed settings for your personal preference (if you're new to using an epilator, the lower setting may be a little less 'painful", while I've been using one for so long, that it's full steam ahead for me.

The Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa is quick to charge as it only takes about 1 hour for a full charge, and then it has up to 40 minutes of battery life, which is more than sufficient to shave both legs.

Overall I really enjoy using this Braun Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa, and compared to other epilators I've used over the past decades, I really love that this one is a wet/dry one, as I find it even quicker and easier to use in the shower, not only can I easily wash away all the small hairs, but I also find that the warm shower helps open the pores in my skin, so it is not only quicker to shave, but also less painful.

So all in all this really is an incredible shaver. No, at $299 this is not cheap, however if you compare it to regular wax treatments in a salon, it will pay for itself in no time, plus you'll have the convenience of doing it in your own home when it suits you.

XMAS GIFT IDEAS: ELECTRICAL GIFT IDEAS FOR HER

There's something about Electrical Gadgets, and I think we can all agree, that they make life a lot easier these days, so today I have a selection of different electrical Xmas gift ideas for her..

Let's start with the teeth, as you just won't be able to resist this new Rose Gold electrical toothbrush from Philips.

The sonic toothbrush has five cleaning modes, including clean, whitening, polish, gumcare and sensitive, so you can get that custumised clean. It also has unique brushes, to help remove surface stains and keep your teeth brighter and whiter. The toothbrush as a digital display, that lights up when in use, and it gives a quick buzz when it is time to move on to the next quadrant of the teeth, to ensure that all teeth get a good clean, and none are neglected. It is super easy to charge, you simply pop the toothbrush into the included glass, which sits on a rose gold holder, which you can plug into the wall outlet, and when not charging, you can store the toothbrush in the glass. Or you can of course store it in the gorgeous pink travel case, that also doubles as a charger when you're on holidays, as then you simply connect it to your laptop, although you don't really need to, as when fully charged, it has a battery life of up to three weeks! This is a super efficient and sleek toothbrush that is nothing short of amazing - but if you don't like it, no harm done, as it comes with a 60 day money back guarantee!

For the body, what about this Silk-epil 9 SkinSpa from Braun. It's no secret that using an epilator is my all time preferred hair removal, and this new model tops anything I've ever used. The Silk Epil 9 is a 4-in-1 model that works both wet and dry, and it has pulsating active vibrations to stimulate the skin for a more gentle epilation. It also has 40 micro-grip tweezers to catch even more hair, even very short hair as short as 0.5mm, while the head of the shaver rotates to adapt to the body's contours. It also comes with two exfoliation brushes, a blue one for deep exfoliation to help avoid those dreaded ingrown hairs, and a purple exfoliation head for more sensitive areas, and for a more refined and silky soft skin. But that's not all - there's also a standard shaver head, a trimmer cap, a high frequency cap and a sensitive skin contact cap included, a total of 6 extras. The shaver has two speed settings for your personal preference (if you're new to using an epilator, the lower setting may be a little less 'painful", and it takes only 1 hour o fully charge, and then it has up to 40 minutes of battery life, which is more than sufficient to shave both legs. Compare to other epilators I've used over the past decades, I really love that this one is a wet/dry one, as I find it even quicker and easier to use in the shower, not only can I easily wash away all the small hairs, but I also find that the warm shower helps open the pores in my skin, so it is not only quicker to shave, but also less painful. This really is the ultimate shaver for super-soft hair free skin!

For the hair, what about this new Diamond Luxe Straightening Brush from VS Sassoon. This heated ceramic straightening brush straightens your hair as you brush it, all while it detangles it too, and keeps it super smooth and free from frizz thanks to the negative ions that are released as it is used. The bristles in the brush are made from heat activated silicone for additional shine. It also has three heat settings, 180 degrees suitable for fine or short hair, 190 degrees suitable for medium hair types, and 200 degrees for thick, curly or frizzy hair. I like that I can also use this on damp hair, so it saves time first having to dry it, and then straighten it afterwards. And the result is really great, not only is my hair left straight and looking healthy, but brushing it from underneath, it also creates some much needed volume at the same time.

Finally, if she is more into luscious curls, what about the Curl Revolution Styling Tong from Remington. This styler has an automatic rotating ceramic tong to make creating anything from a full head of tight curls to loose waves super quick and simple. You simply rotate it one way to roll up the hair, leave for a few moments to 'heat through' before unwinding it. I like to put a little styling mousse in my hair prior to styling it, both to protect my hair from damage, but also to make the waves last longer in my long and heavy hair. Once the hair has cooled down, I gently toussle it, and then give it a light mist with a flexible hairspray, and you're set to go. The ceramic technology helps ensure that it heats up evenly, with variable heat settings between 120C and 200C to cater for various hair types and styles. It heats up super fast, in just 90 seconds, and I really like that it also automatically shuts off, so no need to worry that you forget to do it.

PRODUCT REVIEW: PHILIPS SATINELLE ADVANCED WET AND DRY EPILATOR BRE640

I have been using an epilator as my preferred method of hair removal for years, for the one reason that I simply hate the stubble you always get a mere few days after using a blade. So I was excited when I was asked to try a new model from Philips, the Satinelle Advanced Wet & Dry Epilator BRE 640.

This new Philips Satinelle Advanced Wet & Dry Epilator BRE640 is a very advanced in that it is both a dry and a wet epilator, with all of my previous epilators (and I've had a few over few decades I've been doing this), none of them have been able to be used as a wet shaver.

Some may think that using an epilator hurts, and yes, the first few times it is a little uncomfortable, but if you ask me, no where near as uncomfortable as having a wax at a salon, and bonus is that you can do it from the comfort of your home, at a time it suits you.

I have never in the years of using an epilator experienced any irritation, but for some reason while I was pregnant with our youngest, my skin got really irritated in general, and since then, I have started developing some smaller red dots where the hairs are being pulled out - however, these do disappear after a few hours, so I just need to keep this in mind and not shave my legs just before heading out the door.

All the accessories

But I have, however, discovered that using the shaver in the shower, when my skin is warm and the pores open does minimise this irritation a lot, so I am very impressed.

The epilator head

The Philips Satinelle Shaver has a unique ergonomic S-shaped design, which makes it super easy to hold, even with a small female hand, and it makes it easier to reach difficult areas such as under arms, the back of the legs etc. too. It is suitable to be used on the legs, body and face.

It comes with a massive 8 different accessories including:
  • Trimming head
  • Bikini comb
  • Shaving head
  • Trimming comb
  • Facial area cap
  • Massage cap
  • Skin stretcher
  • Body care head

Combined all these accessories make it possible to give a close shave, remove unwanted facial hairs, remove hair from underarm and bikini areas, and trip and shape delicate areas including the bikini line. I don't have unwanted hair on my face, so have not tried that accessory, and admit to finding the epilator a tad uncomfortable using under my arm pits, where I usually just use a normal shaver - but one day I'll have to bite the bullet and try, and love the fact that t does come with a delicate cap to help make it a little more bearable. But you can also decide between two speed settings, depending on personal preference.

Shaving head with trimming comb

The Satinelle also features micro-ridged discs to help grip hairs easier and more firmly, so even the finest and smallest hairs won't be missed, and it also has a wide 30mm epilator head to remove hairs from a larger area in just one stroke, and it also have a small light that makes it easy to see the fine hairs as you are shaving.

Epilator with massage cap

The shaver also features a massage cap to help ease any irritation while epilating the skin, along with a skin stretcher cap that tightens skin during epilation to stop it from 'grabbing the skin' (one of my previous epilators did that, and let me tell you it hurt!), as well as the stretched out skin makes it quicker and easier for the epilator to grab the hairs. And you can also decide on two speed

Epilator with skin stretcher cap

I also love that this Satinelle shaver charges up quickly, in just 1.5 hours, and that it then has up to 40 minutes of usage, so you can finish without it running flat.

Epilator with facial cap

Epilator with delicate area cap

Overall, using an epilator, has, and I think, always will be my preferred method of shaving my legs - there is no denying that it does take longer to do than using i.e. a standard shaver, as generally I find that I can shave both my legs and bikini line in about 30 minutes - but then you also remain hair-free for the next 2-3 weeks, and without that annoying stubble that comes after just a few days of using a normal shaver.

Trimming head with comb trimmer

You do inevitably miss a few hairs here and there, so at least during summer when I'm wearing skirts and dresses, I like to give my legs a quick shave weekly, which grabs all those few hairs I've previously missed, making shaving quicker and quicker each time.

This is also by far the best and most advanced epilator that I've used. Both in terms of the accessories that it comes with, but also how easily it grabs the hairs, making it so much easier and quicker to use. And the fact that it can also be used while in the shower is a massive bonus for me.

At $199.95 this is not a cheap device, but if you compare to how much money you'd spend on having frequent wax treatments at the salon, or even buying shaving gel and blades, over the years this epilator will last you, you will without a doubt be saving money!

Product Review: Remington Smooth & Silky Face & Body Epilator

Summer has finally come, so it is time to de-fuzz that body, getting it ready for showing up the bare legs! I have to be honest and admit that I have been using an epilator for years. Actually for as long as I can remember. When I started shaving my legs, I quickly realised that I didn’t like using a shave with a blade – yes it is quick and easy, but I don’t like the stubble that you get just a few days after. Then there’s of course the option of getting your legs waxed at a salon, but being a broke student at the time, there was no way I could afford the frequent trips back to the salon again and again. So I figured that I’d buy an epilator, yes the cost up front was a little more than a shaver and a can of shaving gel, but long term it would save me money. And I have loved using one ever since. Here are my thoughts on the *Remington Smooth & Silky Face & Body Epilator;

What They Say:

"This dual speed versatile epilator comes complete with two washable heads – a shaver head with dual trimmers and an epilator head for perfect long lasting results. The epilator removes hair as short as 0.5mm and a built-in precision light ensures you won’t miss a single hair. It also features a perfect angle cap to ensure an optimal tweezing angle, a detail cap for facial use and smaller areas, as well as a massage cap with aloe vera to help reduce any discomfort."

RRP: $79.95 - Available from all leading electrical retailers

What I Say:

Now, I am not going to lie, using an epilator is a little painful. But you do get used to it. I used be able to shave my legs and then get dressed straight after to go out – but I think something happened to my skin while I was pregnant. It has become very sensitive. So now, I get all these red tiny dots on my skin where the hairs have been pulled out, and this lasts for a few hours, and feeling a little itchy and the skin warm as well. But just note that this is not just this Remington Smooth & Silky Face & Body Epilator doing this, even my old shaver does this – but again, this never happened before I got pregnant!

The Remington Smooth & Silky Face & Body Epilator works to pull out the hairs at the roots – picking up hairs as small as 0.5mm.

It does take a while to shave the legs, but the results are so worth it, your legs are so silky smooth afterwards. And you will have no stubble coming out a few days later. Remington promises that you will be hair free for up to 4 weeks, - and it really does take the hairs a few weeks to fully grow back, so really you don’t have to shave more than every 4 weeks or so, although I do prefer to do it on a weekly basis, as that way I pick up any hairs I may have missed last time, and also that way it doesn’t take quite as long to do, as you are constantly just maintaining.

The Remington Smooth & Silky Face & Body Epilator comes with two different caps, including the epilator cap and a normal shaving head. In addition it also comes with a Massaging Cap with aloe vera, a Perfect Angle Cap which ensures optimal tweezing angle and close contact with the skin, as well as a Detail Cap intended for facial use. And finally it also includes a small little bag to store everything in.

I tried using the Massaging Cap with the aloe vera on the tips to soothe and calm the skin, and while this cap does feel lovely on the skin, it is not enough to avoid the tiny red does on my skin.

The Epilator is mains powered, which although it is sometimes a little tricky manoeuvring the cord around, does give you constant and consistent power, which is good for someone like me who usually forget to re-charge the tool. It also has two different speed settings for removing coarse or thin hair, and although I don’t have particularly coarse hair, I did prefer the higher speed, feeling I was able to finish shaving sooner. Finally, it also has a precision light so help you see even the smallest of hairs, but as I am usually shaving my legs outside, whenever the weather permits, I really don’t make use of this feature – but of course during winter where I have to shave inside in the ensuite, I am sure it will be a very handy feature as well.

The epilator is also intended for use on the face as well as in the bikini line and under the arms, but I don’t really have any facial hairs so I have not tested it for that, and I am too much of a chicken to use the epilator under my arms, as I can just imagine that it would hurt so much – but instead I used the shaver head for that purpose, and it works very well as well. I did however use the epilator cap on the bikini line, and again it is very efficient, although again it caused a little redness for a few hours.

The epilator has small and lightweight design, making it easy to manoeuvre around and get to even hard to reach areas behind the legs.

What I Like:

  • It keeps my legs and bikini line free from hairs for weeks without stubble
  • It is easy to use
  • It is well priced, and long term will save you money not having to buy shaving blades, shaving gel or go to the salon for a wax
  • It comes with 2 year warranty
  • It comes with a 30 day money back guarantee, so if you don’t like it, you can return it
  • Suitable for use on both legs, face, underarms and bikini line

What I Don’t Like:
  • My skin gets a little irritated with tiny red dots where I’ve used the epilator

Overall, I have yet again confirmed that my preferred method of shaving my legs is using an epilator, and this is Smooth & Silky Face & Body Epilator from Remington is a such an efficient shaver, making it quick and easy to be hair free.
