Product Review & LOTD: Estee Lauder Pure Color Velvet Lipstick in Violet Crush

It is only a short while ago I posted about Estee Lauder launching the Violet Underground collection, and as I absolutely love Estee Lauder products, I happily accepted when I was asked to trial the limited edition Pure Color Velvet Lipstick in Violet Crush. Here are my thoughts;

What They Say:
"All the opulence of velvet in a new soft matte lipstick. Smooth and creamy formula with rich, intense color impact. Soft, sensuous and non-drying. High-pigment shades for high drama".

RRP: $45 – Available from Estee Lauder counters, and Estee Lauder Online

What I Say:

Being a little conservative with the makeup that I wear, I have to say that I was a little taken back when I first saw the purple colour of the Rebellious Violet lipgloss and the Pure Color Velvet Lipstick in Violet Crush, I thought those violet colours would look crazy on me. But then when I tried the Rebellious Violet lipgloss, I was so surprised at how much I actually liked the colour once it was applied to my lips. So that also means that I had high hopes for the Pure Color Velvet Lipstick in Violet Crush as well.

As with all Estee Lauder Pure lipsticks, it looks simply and stylish and very classy. It comes with a stylish gold lid with Estee Lauder ‘emblem’, which does make it look luxurious. The actual base is clear allowing you to see the colour of the lipstick. The logo emblem also holds the cap firmly in place, so you wouldn’t have to worry about it becoming loose in your handbag.

When I tried it the lipstick… again I was so pleasantly surprised. Once applied, the lipstick is not as purple as I thought it would be, rather it is a bright fuchsia with a blue/violet undertone, but I think this shade is done quite right and won’t be too cool or too bright for most people to be able to pull off.

The lipstick is easy to work with, and the actual texture of the lipstick is ultra creamy and non-drying, and it is has a completely matte finish and is very highly pigmented, leaving the lips saturated with colour.

There isn’t a lot of color transfer when I eat or drink, and the formula is amazingly long-wearing, and easily lasts 4-6 hours!!

I also tried to just  dab it on the lipstick  put it on the bottom lip before pressing my lips together, which makes the colour less intense, and rather it becomes a lovely stain that for me is more wearable for everyday wear!

I also tried to use the Estee Lauder Pure Colour lipgloss in Rebellious Violet on top of the lipstick, and they two work beautifully together, giving the lips a nice shine, although reducing the wear of the lipstick.

As with all Estee Lauder lip products, it has a sweetish scent. It is not too strong and doesn’t bother me personally, actually I kind of love it, which is a good thing as it does tend to linger for a while.

All in all, I’m really surprised, - I already have several Pure Color Lipsticks in other shades, but I had never thought that I’d actually feel comfortable wearing a violet shade. I certainly would never have purchased it from seeing it on the shelf! And while it for me is a little too bold and bright to wear every day, I can definitely see myself wearing this for special occasions or nights out, where as for an every day look, I do prefer wearing the lipstick as a stain for a more toned-down subtle look.

  2. I actually really dislike the EL lipstick scents. :S They also leave a weird taste in my mouth. My mum doesn't experience this, but my sister does too, so it could be some kind of sensitivity to an ingredient? Shame though, they have such nice colours.

    I live in Australia and makeup is more expensive here than other countries, so is it $45 in USD?
