PRODUCT REVIEW: MEDIK8 RETINOL 6TR ADVANCED NIGHT SERUM

Sadly at the age where anti-ageing products are taking over the shelf in my bathroom, I am well aware that the ingredient Retinol is considered a power ingredient proven to provide anti-ageing benefits. I was using the products quite a few months ago – well before I got pregnant (note that retinol or Vitamin A as it is also called, is a no-no ingredient if you are pregnant or lactating, as it is believed to cause damage to the unborn child) – but again luckily, due to the high strength of this, I had already finished the bottle when I got pregnant, I have merely had this post sitting in my files waiting to be published.. so here you go, here are my thoughts on the MediK8 Retinol 6TR Advanced Night Serum*;

What They Say:
Medik8 Retinol 6TR is a powerful yet light vitamin A serum that helps to rejuvenate skin at night - the optimal time for skin repair and replenishment. Retinol 6TR visibly regenerates the epidermal layer of the skin, refining skin tone and brightening up darker patches on the skin by accelerating natural skin cell turnover. It unblocks pores and regulates sebum production to clear and prevent acne and blackheads. The appearance of facial contours is smoothed, through stimulation of collagen and elastin production leading to a more youthful skin appearance.

What I Say:
Growing up in Scandinavia where the summers are short, meant that when we finally had a nice warm sunny day, we were outside enjoying the sun all day long. And those were times where all you used was SPF2, yep SPF2, if any at all! Needless to say that decades on I have more pigmentation that I like, and add to that a combination skin that has always been prone to breakouts – so the Medik8 Retinol 6TR, promising to both help unblocking pores, regulating sebum production and clearing and preventing acne, as well as refining the skin tone and brightening darker patches of pigmentation, seems like it has been created for my skin.

In short, the Retinol 6TR Serum helps with:

  • Improves appearance of lines and wrinkles
  • Smoothes and firms the skin
  • Helps correct the appearance of photo-damage
  • Brighten up and refines skin tone
  • Reduces congestion and clears the skin

The night serum is a professional strength containing 0.6% vitamin A, and as it is so strong it is advised to use it at night where it can work its magic, also because it may make the skin more sensitive to the sun, so hence best avoided during night time. It has a high-tech time-release delivery system that gradually releases the vitamin A during the night.

The serum is very concentrated and I found that I only needed to use around three drops to cover my face completely, and it quickly absorbs into my skin, without leaving it feeling greasy or tacky – and without any stinging at all, which you could possibly expect from a high-strength serum like this. The serum does contain Vitamin E as well to provide antioxidant protection , but regardless I follow with my usual night cream to seal in the serum.

Also worth mentioning is that the serum contains no parabens or preservatives, and as it is also fragrance free, it has next to no scent.

As the serum is so concentrated I did build up the use, by first using it every second day for a week, to make sure I had no irritations or reactions, before starting to use it every night.

When I wake in the morning and rise my face with cold water as I usually do, I can instantly both see and feel that the serum has done wonders. My skin is not only very soft, and far from as greasy as it often is when I wake in the morning, especially during the warmer months, but is also has a lovely glow, as if I have just had a beauty treatment in a salon. Absolutely no signs of redness or irritation in sight.

As the days and weeks go on, and I use this Retinol 6 TR serum nightly, my skin is improving by the day. It is less and less greasy, especially in the t-zone area, and consequently I seem to be getting less breakouts, and those pimples that I do get, seems to fade a lot quicker than usual.

And then there’s the pigmentation. Minor pigmentation marks seems to vanish, while darker clusters of pigmentation seems to get smaller and gradually fade. My overall skin tone simply seems more even, and my skin more clear and glowing. And all from such a tiny bottle of serum!

At $89 for a small bottle containing just 15ml, you may find that expensive, but when you remember that you can hardly get a facial at a salon for under $100 these days, and that this serum helps give you that nice glow you otherwise usually only experience when having a facial, and you have it when you wake every morning. Then I think it is worth every cent. And believe it or not, the tiny bottle lasts you longer than you think.

Unfortunately I got pregnant before I got around to purchasing a new bottle, and now the dreaded pregnancy pigmentation seems to increase on my face by the day, so as soon as it is safe for me to use again, it will be on the top of my shopping list, so I can hopefully get that even glow once more!
