PRODUCT REVIEW: MARY KAY BRONZING POWDER AND HIGHLIGHTING POWDER

Today I’d like to share with you my thoughts on the Mary Kay Bronzing and Highlight Powder;

What They Say:

Bronzing Powder: "Get that just-back-from-the-beach look anytime! It adds warmth to any skin tone, leaving it looking healthy and radiant. And the easy-to-blend, buildable colour lets you create the bronzed look right for you while it controls shine. Lightweight, fade-resistant and long-wearing. Not too shimmery and not too matte, it's beautifully pigmented with a luminous pearl finish that applies easily and evenly. It never looks dry on skin and won't settle into fine lines, wrinkles or pores. Available in 2 shades; Light to Medium and Medium to Dark."

Highlighting Powder: "Highlight your complexion with beautiful ease Brighten. Highlight. Glow. Add natural-looking highlights almost anywhere on skin — cheekbones, chin, brow bones, all over the face, even shoulders or décolleté. Buildable, fade-resistant and long-wearing, leaves skin looking fresh and radiant as it controls shine. The lightweight formula feels soft and silky and never looks dry on the face. Plus, it won't settle into fine lines, wrinkles or pores. With just a touch of delicate shimmer, the luminous pearl finish applies easily and evenly to create subtle radiance and an unforgettable glow."

What I Say:

I’ve previously trialled products from Mary Kay, including the Peach Satin Hands and the At Play Jelly Lip Glosses, and I was so impressed with these products that I was looking very forward to trialling the bronzer and highlighting powders as well.
When I am feeling tired, I look pale and drab and that’s when nothing beats using a good bronzer and a highlighter for some colour and radiance to the face, so I was excited when the new Bronzing Powder and Highlighting Powder from Mary Kay arrived at my doorstep.

The bronzing powder comes in two shades ; a Light to Medium and Medium to Dark, and I’ve found that the lighter of the two works better for my medium beige skintone, while the darker of the two shades is a touch dark for my skin. The colour is very natural, and doesn’t look orange on my skin, rather it looks so natural. The bronzer has tiny shimmer particles in it, giving you just the right amount for a luminous look, without making you look too shiny or glittery.

The bronzer is extremely pigmented and very easy to blend too, so it only takes to lightest of sweeps to get a nice healthy sun kissed glow, as if you’ve just returned from a tropical beach holiday, and if you like, you can easily build up the colour a little, while still maintaining a natural look. The bronzer is easy to apply using a larger powder brush, and it also helps set my foundation, so it stays put longer. And it stays put nicely throughout the day without changing colour and without settling into fine lines, and I only need a touch-up by the afternoon, but that is pretty standard anyway for my combination skin.

The highlighting powder only comes in one cream/champagne shade that is designed to suit all skin tones. Like the bronzing powder, this highlighter is so easy to work with, and it blends so easy. It is perfect to apply on the top of the cheekbones, or under the brow bone. Naturally, being a highlighter it does contain shimmery particles, but again, the particles are so tiny that it just gives you the right amount for a radiant glow.

Bronzer in Medium to Dark, Highlighter

Both the bronzers and the highlighter come in slimline plastic compacts with a window so you can easily see the colour of the product. The pan sits loosely in these so you can transfer these into a specific Mary Kay Compact. While these plastic compacts are obviously not very pretty, and doesn’t contain a mirror etc, I really don’t mind as they are so slim that they take up less room in my makeup drawer and not to mention my cosmetic bag when on the go. In saying that, I rarely apply makeup on the go, so again I really don’t mind that they do not come with a mirror or a brush. Plus, the fact that they do come in a cheaper plastic compact, no doubt helps keep the products at a low $24 each, which in my opinion is very cheap for such high quality products.

What I Like:

  • Products are very pigmented and easy to blend
  • Come in slimline plastic compacts that take up very little room in your makeup drawer
  • Well priced at $24 each
  • Lasts all day

 What I Don’t Like:
  • I would love if products were also sold at retail shops so I could test colours and touch and feel before purchase
  • Bronzer only available in two shades, and I could imagine that those with very fair skintones would fine the lightest shade, the Light to Medium, too dark

Overall, Mary Kay has yet again managed to impress me as the products are of such high quality and such a pleasure to work with.
