PRODUCT REVIEW: FACIAL OILS FROM SKINSOSS - ROSEHIP, JOJOBA, PATCHOULI R BLEND AND YLANG R BLEND

Having combination skin prone to breakouts, it has taken me many years to realise that using oils on my skin would be ok. I had the thought that my skin was clearly greasy enough, no need to add further, so I simply stayed away. But after reading review after review from people with skin like mine, I eventually decided to give it a shot myself, and so glad I did. I’ve since discovered many different oils, and now use then regularly, if not daily in my skincare routine.

For the past weeks, I’ve been putting a selection of Facial Oils from Skinsoss to the test, including;

Skinsoss Pure Rosehip*
Skinsoss Pure Jojoba*
Skinsoss Patchouli R. Blend*
Skinsoss Ylang R. Blend*

First, let me quickly introduce you to Skinsoss, a Melbourne brand that carefully select and blend the oils locally for maximum benefits to the skin.

Let’s start with the Pure Rosehip Oil
, which is also my favourite of the four oils. Rosehip oils are pure oil extracted from the hip of the rose, when the fruit left once the rose has bloomed and lost its petals. It is rich in essential fatty acids omega 3, 6 and 9, and helps the skin regenerate. It also contains antioxidants from the lycopene, along with Vitamin C to help improve skin texture and reduce sign of ageing.

As with all oils, you only need a few drops on clean skin, before your usual moisturiser. The Rosehip leaves my ageing skin feeling soft and smooth, and quickly absorbs into the skin (as long as I don’t apply too much), and with continued use, I do find that it is leaving my skin looking more glowing too. It has next to no scent which I quite like.

Next up is the Pure Jojoba, which also has next to no scent. The jojoba oil is pure oil that comes from pressing the seed of the jojoba plant, and it is high in vitamin E to help add intense moisture to the skin. It is recommended for those with oily and acne prone skin as it is said to help balance the skin’s oil production and break down the excess sebum in clogged pores. In spite of my combination skin, with often congested pores, I still prefer the Rosehip oil, and find that it is simply better for my ageing skin. But that said, it is a lovely oil that leave the skin feeling deeply nourished, and soft and smooth. I also like using the Jojoba oil as a cuticle oil, as my dry nails clearly enjoy that too.

Then there’s the Patchouli R. Blend, which is a blended oil containing a mix of Rosehip oil, Almond oil, Macadamia oil, Patchouli oil, Cedarwood oil, Lavender oil and Vitamin E. Unlike the first two oils, this one has a stronger woody scent with an oriental touch, no doubt due to the added cedar wood and patchouli. The oil has a high contents of fatty acids, and antioxidants, along with vitamins E and A, and help not just add intense moisture to the skin, but also fight signs of ageing including reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Due to the vitamin A, I personally suggest using this in the evening, as Vitamin A is known to make the skin more sensitive to the sun.

While I did like the scent of this oil, I do find it a little strong smelling, to use on my face, although I do love the Vitamin A contents and hence anti-ageing benefits of this oil - so I’ve been using this oil at night on my décolleté. That way the stronger scent doesn’t seem quite as strong.

Finally, there’s the Ylang R. Blend, which is another blended oil containing a mix of Rosehip oil, Almond oil, Apricot kernel oil, Ylang Ylang oil, Geranium oil, Lavender oil, Bergamot oil and Vitamin E. This oil also has a slightly stronger and a bit spicy scent, due to the geranium and Ylang Ylang - and again, with its vitamin A contents it is good for fighting sighs of ageing including reducing lines and wrinkles, while the Apricot kernel oil helps stimulate collagen. This is a perfect oil for my ageing skin, and again I suggest using it at night due to the vitamin A contents. It is a lovely oil, but I still simply prefer the more subtle scent of the pure rosehip oil for use on my face. So I’ve been alternating this Ylang R. Blend and the Patchouli R. Blend for use on my décolleté in the evening, and my otherwise slightly neglected décolleté is clearly loving the increased attention, looking and feeling deeply moisturised, more plump and generally simply healthier.

My favourite of these are without a doubt the Rosehip Oil and my skin is really enjoying it, and I love using the jojoba oil as a hand and nail oil. But I love that Skinsoss has blended oils available too, so you can experiment and find a combination just right for your skin type and concerns too.

The oils all come in dark glass bottles, to prevent exposure to sunlight, and hence preserve the quality and efficacy of the oils. They all have a little dropper, which I really like, as it makes it easy to dispense the few drops needed without any wastage. I also love the fact that this is a local brand, doesn’t get much better.
