PRODUCT REVIEW: OUR EXPERIENCE WITH ITCHY BABY CO. FOR TREATING ECZEMA

Those who regularly tune into my sites will probably know and remember that my little boy was very sick, spending almost 5 months in hospital from he was just 6 weeks old. He had a life threatening auto immune illness, that saw him have intense steroid and chemotherapy in the lead up to a bone marrow transplant. It has been one and a half years since he came home, although this time has been very dominated by hospital checkups, and living in isolation as his new immune system developed. Thankfully he is doing very well…

But… our little boy, who is about to turn two next year, has very sensitive skin, possibly due to the intense treatment he went through at the hospital. At one point, he had a rash, that developed so rapidly, from a small spot, to covering almost his full face, scalp and neck in no time, and we ended up taking him to the hospital a late evening as it was is extreme and due to his medical history. But it disappeared almost as quickly as it came, and nobody really knew what the cause was. And thankfully it's never returned again.

That said, his big brother, almost 4 years old, who is also very blonde and fair skinned, also seems to have the same sensitive and often dry skin, so needless to say that we are always very cautious of which products we use on their sensitive skins.

So when we were offered to try a selection of products from itchy baby co., we didn't hesitate to say yes. itchy baby co. was developed as the founder, Julia's toddler was admitted to hospital with eczema covering 75% of his body. And hence Julia, a pharmacist developed the itchy baby co. range, as she struggled finding products to help manage her little boy's eczema.

The itchy baby co. range of natural bath soaks help you target your baby’s dry, irritated and sensitive skin conditions. They are made with natural colloidal oatmeal in the original formula and added goats milk and coconut in other formulations.

The itchy baby co. Natural Oatmeal Bath Soak is used by adding it your bub's bath water. The ingredients will quickly and easily absorb into the water, and help nourish the irritated, itchy and dry skin, by rehydrating and replenishing the skin - all while your bub is enjoying his bath. The colloidal oatmeal helps moisturise and relieve dry skin, by leaving a barrier on the skin which stops water loss and keeps the moisture in, thus preventing the skin from being dry while soothing and softening the skin, so even out of the bath the skin will be protected. It also helps stop the itch, as helps normalise the PH Level of the skin, and also has anti-inflammatory properties.
Other versions available include:
  • itchy baby co. Natural Oatmeal Bath Soak with goats milk
  • itchy baby co. Natural Oatmeal Bath Soak with goats milk & organic coconut
The added Goats Milk contains many nutrients, minerals and enzymes that can help nourish the skin, whilst coconut is known for its soothing and moisturising properties.

I really love using these soaks in my boy's bath. Even in periods when their skin is free from major irritations, I know that their skin is extra protected and given extra nourishment. And I find that this is even more important as we head towards the colder months, where I know their skin will become even drier. These bath soaks are so quick and easy to use. You simply add two heaped scoops of the soak with the included spoon, and dissolve it into the lukewarm bath. And then let your baby soak in the water for 10 minutes as per usual.

Once out of the bath, dry the baby as per usual, and then moisturise immediately afterwards to help look in the moisture, and further protect, hydrate, and soothe the skin. The itchy baby co. Natural Oatmeal Moisturiser with organic coconut helps naturally target the skin’s natural barrier function while also adding extra hydration and nourishment. While it also contains organic shea butter, organic beeswax, carnuba wax and vitamin E.
This cream is suitable for all ages, from three months old, and it is slightly thick and does take a moment to absorb into the skin, but once it has, you can immediately feel how it is adding intense hydration to the skin, and it is leaving the skin silky soft an smooth (I've been taking the opportunity to massage the remains into my hands, nails and cuticles, which they've thoroughly enjoyed too!). Another benefit is that you also get the opportunity to give your bub a good massage, which we all know they love! This moisturiser is also for itchy, dry and sensitive skin, and it can be used three times daily or as needed.
Then there's the itchy baby co. Natural Scalp Oil, which contains among others oat extract to form a silky barrier on the skin to trap hydration and help stop moisture loss from the scalp, while Coconut and organic sunflower and calendula oils help soothe and nourish. This oil is very concentrated and you use by massaging a small pump of the oil into your bubs damp scalp with your fingers, and leaving it in, without rinsing. The oil forms a nourishing barrier on the skin to trap hydration and stop moisture loss, and hence the itchiness too. The oil does make the hair look and feel slightly greasy, so we've found that it is best used at night.
Overall I have to say that I am more than impressed with these products. I love using the bath soaks, as it is such a quick way of giving my boys' skin extra moisture and protection, and from the very first use, I could see and feel that the soaks made a tremendous difference. Immediately after the bath, their skin didn’t feel dry, which it otherwise usually did following a bath. And while we always make sure to moisture their skin following a bath, the following day or even later in the day, their skin, would already feel and look dry, and at times a bit scaly too - but when using the bath soak and following with the Natural Oatmeal Moisturiser, just once daily, at night after their bath, their skin is clearly feeling and looking soft and nourished around the clock - and as a consequence I have also not seen or heard them complain about their skin being itchy. So using these products clearly makes our two boys feel so much more comfortable.
I also love that the products are made with nothing but natural ingredients and that they do not contain any harmful ingredients such as sulphates, parabens, silicones, phthalates, mineral oils, DEA or petro chemicals and of course no added or artificial fragrances either, all of which would only irritate sensitive skin further. Just simple and natural ingredients which are put together to nourish and soothe the dry irritated skin.
If your little one - or even yourself is suffering with eczema or dry and irritated skin, the itchy baby co. range is seriously worth trying, you'd be amazed at the results - but if you want further proof, just check out all the incredible testimonies on the itchy baby co. website!
