Product Review: Neutrogena Beach Defence Water + Sun Barrier Sunscreen Lotion & Spray SPF50

Usually by now we’ve had nice summery weather for at least a month. Officially there’s a week until summer, but still Melbourne is experiencing the worst weather in a long time. It just won’t stop raining, and can’t say that it is particularly warm either – I am still wearing my Ugg boots in the mornings!!

But when the sun is finally peeking out, it is very strong, and consequently it is so important to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. And last year, the new SPF50 sunscreens were finally released in Australia as well. Not that it makes a huge difference between SPF30 and SPF50 as SPF 30+ guards against 96.7 per cent of UVB rays, while SPF 50+ is only slightly higher at around 98 per cent – but the way I see is, is that every extra bit of protection counts. Anyway, here are my thoughts on the new Neutrogena Beach Defence Water + Sun Barrier Spray & Lotion;

What They Say:
"Neutrogena Beach Defence Sunscreen Lotion and Spray– Broad Spectrum are  lightweight, easily absorbed sunscreens that offer broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. With a high SPF50 protection, the sunscreen is water resistant, effective for up to four hours and hypoallergenic. Featuring Helioplex technology, the cream absorbs UVA and UVB rays, resulting in photostable, durable protection. It contains moisturising properties to help relieve dry skin associated with the outdoor elements. Beach Defence Sunscreen Lotion and Spray are oil and PABA free."

RRP: Sunscreen Lotion $16.99 (198ml), Sunscreen Spray $16.99 (184g) – Available from supermarkets, pharmacies and priceline

What I Say:
The Sunscreen Lotion has a nice light consistency and absorbs easily and quickly into the skin without making the skin feel greasy or tacky. Often sunscreens make my combination and acne prone skin breakout on the shoulder, chest and face, but luckily that has not yet been the case on my body with the Beach Defence Lotion, and as for my face, I have to be honest and admit that I have not been using it there, as I much prefer using a SPF specifically the face to avoid the breakouts.

The Sunscreen Lotion comes in a gorgeous bright yellow bottle with a flip lid that closes nice and tightly, so no need to worry that it will spill out in your handbag or that you will get sand in it when you’re at the beach.

The Sunscreen Spray comes as the name suggests in a spray can, which like the Sunscreen Lotion is a bright yellow. It sprays a nice fine mist onto your skin, which I feel that you however still need to rub in slightly with your hands, although I am sure that you can spray your back and leave it to absorb into the skin by itself.

My one worry with the spray is that the mist is so fin as well as it seems a lot lighter in consistency than the lotion, so I am a little unsure if I have applied enough, which I find it a little easier to gauge when using a sunscreen lotion or cream.

I really love how easy the spray is to use, and I love that it absorbs quickly into the skin, and leaves my skin with a nice sheen, yet making my skin feel greasy or sticky.

Unfortunately it does leave my bathroom floor a little greasy, to the point where I felt that I had wash it after applying the sunscreen – so I do recommend applying it outside or at least putting a towel underneath you before you start to spray.

Unlike other sunscreens which often have a chemical scent, both the Sunscreen Lotion and the Sunscreen Spray have a divine fresh and fruity scent that reminds me of pineapple, yet without being too sweet or sickly.

Both the Lotion and the Spray are 4 hours water resistant, so it will keep you protected for quite a while, and I love that they are both oil free as well as PABA free. PABA stands for Para-Aminobenzoic Acid, which has previously been frequently used ultraviolet light absorber, but is often said to cause allergic reactions.

What I Like:
  • The lotion absorbs quickly and easily into the skin without leaving the skin feeling greasy
  • The spray is easy to use, and it is a super fine mist that leaves my skin with a nice sheen, yet not greasy
  • Both the Lotion and the Spray have SPF50+ and are 4 hours water resistant
  • Both the Lotion have a gorgeous fresh fruity scent
  • The products don’t make my skin feel oily or make it break out
  • The products are oil and PABA free
  • The products are well priced

What I Don’t Like:
  • I find it a little difficult to estimate how much of the spray I need to use to be protected
  • The spray leaves my bathroom floor feeling and looking a little greasy

Overall, I really love these new sunscreen products from Neutrogena, and I feel that they leave my skin well protected against the harmful UV rays, and I love that they do not make my skin feel greasy, and not least they smell fantastic, so I will definitely be buying these again!
